THe PF tek recommends pond water, rain water, etc, when mixing your cakes.
"Step 1. Place 1/2 cup of vermiculite into a mixing bowl. Place the brown rice powder on top of the vermiculite. Slowly add the water directly onto the brown rice powder, wetting it first. Thoroughly mix the ingredients. The mixture should feel damp and cohesive. More water (or less) can be used if experimenting to improve the fruiting. Mix Each jars substrate individually for loading to insure accurate formula rendering.
A note on water: A recent update is worth mentioning. Water quality is indeed important. I have found out that "natural" water is the water to use. It makes for better cultivation of this mushroom on this simple substrate. Distilled water is good for making spore solutions and syringes and storing spore solution. But for growing, they seem to like the "natural" water such as: swamp, lake, stream, pond, river, ground or any water that is rich in organics. I have heard that "mineral" type drinking water is good and makes a difference. I suppose that water seeping from an organic compost pile would be about the best. "
Wouldn't this encourage contamination? Does it really work better?

I have never seen any mention of using anything but tap or distilled water. I would agree that using those other types of water would not be prudent at this juncture! Although, the other types of water could potentially have some positive qualities, but It is FAR from neccessary IMO.

I read this on the PF Tek that is recommended by the shroomery for beginners: http://www.shroomery.org/index.php/par/23593/pag/1
I have natural water on hand, so I can easily use that if it MIGHT help. But if it's bad for contamination, I dont want to risk it.

If your going to do this you need a PC. Boiling alone will not work. I like water after its set in Hourse poo a few days and strained but you will have a higher contam rate.

so what you're saying is: PC + pond water = steaming + pond water =
I dont have a PC; therefore, I should just used bottled water.
Correct me if I'm wrong please.

Since your steaming I would suggest the bottled water.

Girlninja, huh???
...anywho, if you sterilize the pond water the micro nutrients, and other minirals will infact stay intact...thus providing your mushies with what they want, while killing what they don't want. i tried it, and it worked better than distilled water. Another thing that i tried was bottled spring water, which seemed to give similar results. good luck ninjachick!!!!!

I would just go with the distilled water for your first grow. It's proven that it is less likely to contaminate than natural water, so why risk it? When you get more experienced and confident about your abilities, then it would be the perfect time to experiement and find out what works best for you. Trust me, distilled water and a little hydrogen peroxide is perfect and will get you a generous yield your first grow. I believe I received 132 wet grams my first harvest off of 4 PF 1/2 Pint BRF cakes. What I realize now, that would have helped in the fruiting period, is a more efficient terrarium. I was using a styrofoam cooler with a drip shield. It only held 4 1/2 pint cakes and I had to manually fan it and mist it. This make a hassle and sometime they went neglected for half a day to a day. If you get a Poor Man's Pod like I replied in a previous post of yours, it will dramatically increase yields. Good luck!

yeah I'm a ninja, so don't mess with me! sterilize - just boil it for a while?
Thanks for your advice!!

I'm going to use a 10 gallon aquarium or a large rubbermaid container. Either way, I'm spraying and fanning manually. I don't mind the work.. It's my first time, I'm excited!

I strongly suggest perlite humidification with a manual fan.

I hope you're up to it.
How about this? Go buy some perlite and put that on the bottom of your aquarium and wet it.
This will make all your misting responsibilities disappear, however, you will still have to fan it.
Enjoy

Sounds like your set. Stay with your game plan. Follow the PF tek and all will be good. Water content is the most importent thing when starting out.To much and the myc grows slow and may contam before finishing. To little, I don't know, never had to little. Maybe smaller and less shrooms.
Whatever happens just keep trying and learning.

I meant that you PC the water, or boil it covered for at least a couple hours. One of my friends just microwaved it 4 times @ 3 min. and it worked, but i wouldn't recomend that at all.
p.s. you can get a 6 qt pressure cooker at walmart for like 20 bucks. (its a must have)

Don't use distilled water! It will work, but spring water is much better IMO.... And, using natural water WILL NOT give you a higher rate of contam's if you are PCing! It will certainly give good results though.....

The perlite probably isn't really necessary, i live in Louisiana, the natural humidity is in the 90s already
but that stage is a few weeks away, I'll do more reading by the time I fruit and decide what I'm gonna do

I could understand the Walmart not having vermiculite... But no jars or pressure cooker?? Did you ask a worker? That's so bizarre. I mean.. those are common kitchen things.. walmart has to have them.
Oh.. and a guy in my psyc class was walking out late at like 3 am, and he saw a shadow being cast from the streetlight behind him. So he turned around, and there was a ninja standing there, looking him straight in the eye. No lie. Someone else in the class even confirmed it, because apparently some group of students was working on a film at that time, and there was a ninja in the movie. I thought that was interesting and you reminded me of the event.
