Is this Normal for a Pressure Cooker?
    #5284177 - 02/10/06 08:35 AM (17 years, 3 hours ago)

I bought a 23qt Mirro Pressure cooker on Ebay, and it was new, but obviously not of very good quality to begin with - the inside of the lid where the seal sits and even the top of the pot is very rough and uneven. So when I bring it up to pressure, I can see drops of water sizzling on the edge of the cooker where it appears to be leaking. This isn't normal, is it?

no, it shouldn't be doing that. Did you remove the seal and washed it as the manual said?

it depends on who manufactured it. use some veg. oil on the rubber seal and give it time it should seal it's self, and make sure you are using the 15 psi or it might not seal right.

After some pressure builds, the seal should expand & SEAL.

If not, ya got me?

I started with an AA & never had one problem.

I hate to be a naysayer but that thing is dangerous. Just imagine you're sitting by your stove waiting for you PC to come up to 15 PSI. Then all of a sudden you get hit with a small shockwave and and doused in 250 degree steam. At least that's what I'd be thinking every time I fired it up. At the restaraunt I had my first job, an oil PC exploded, killed 2 people and burned the building to the ground.

It's normal to see drops sizzling as the PC comes up to pressure. Once at pressure, they should stop. If not, return it.

It was an eBay purchase. I doubt return is possible.

Ya, they spit a little prior to the seal expanding & sealing tight.

I would imagine he might try buying a new seal, if the problem continues. That might fix it.

The top being rough is worrying. Veg oil allows some seal but wont work miracles. I had to put a very thin layer of silicone sealant on the pot and top lid, allow to cure for a few days and use veg oil on the pot.
DO NOT FUCK WITH PRESSURE COOKERS. they are extremely dangerous. I work with pressure vessels, designing etc and am still very wary about altering them.

Years back, I lurked, & eyeballed what the big boys had for PC's.
The consensus was AA's were the extreme PC machine.

Built like tanks. Metal to metal seals. Pressure gauge & toggle valve pressure releases, that don't lose moisture (unless over-pressured).

So, I bought one.

IT WAS THE BEST MYCO INVESTMENT, I ever made.

Since then, I have bought/sold/traded & have several AA's.

If you are going to stay in this hobby.

GET AN AA PC.
