Health food store. But there are cheaper substrates, imho.
Try the organic foods section of your supermarket for the flax seeds.
Also, I found a website: http://www.stevensfarm.com/2bags.htm for flax seeds and another: http://www.mannaharvest.net/product_info.php/products_id/555 for rye berries, but it would probably be cheaper to get it locally.

thanks man. My jars are colonizing super slow so I thought i'ld try aliens substrate tek and make some more jars. It supposedly colonizes faster and grows shrooms 10-15 % stronger.

How is your water balance? Bad water balance will cause slow colonization every time.
What's your substrate?

The first jars i did were 1pt brf jars mixed at 2/3 vermiculite 1/4 bfr pre ground 1/4 water and only inoculated 1cc per jar.

I just did 5 1/2pt jars 4 days ago. they are mixed at 1/2 ver 1/4 bfr I ground and 1/4 water but I added a little more water till i could squeeze my substrate and get get a few drops to come out. Also I inoculated with a honey water LC 2cc per jar.

My last 5 are not showing any signs of growth yet. I think i need to go get some light malt and dextrose do a good LC and use aliens substrate tek for some more jars. Does anyone with some experience think this is a good idea or should i just keep it simple? Keep in mind these are my first attempts.

Well, although it's been nigh onto 100 years since I've made cakes, I believe everything you are doing sounds about right, concerning the ratios and water content, that is.
Lots of variables can cause poor growth -- not necessarily the nutrient content of the substrate. Lots of people have had good results with brown rice flour and vermiculite.
How long ago did you inoculate your oldest jars, and how colonized are they?

3 weeks on the big jars and they range from about 30% to 5% but all show some growth. I ground my BRF on my new jars and the coffee grinder couldn't get it ground very fine. This won't cause slow colonization will it?
