UPDATE: I didn't take into consideration what would happen if the perlite ever dried up. That was completely retarted on my part.

Well, be VERY careful handling it if its dry. Micro-perlite gets everywhere. After this experiment, I recommend getting a finer mesh. Hyphae suggested a finer mesh available near fish aquarium supplies. Might be better. (Hey, damnit, at least I admit my mistakes!)

well, you cut up a garbage bag and sew that onto the bottom of the bag, that would stop the perlite from hitting the FC.

True true. It's not a problem really when the perlite is wet, because it sticks together. But when it gets dry, watch out!

I thought you needed a layer of dry perlite on top of the wet perlite...

There are a couple of different ways to do your perlite. Some people soak the perlite, then drain off the excess water in a strainer and use it like that. Some people lay the dry perlite down in the FC, then pour water into the FC until it is just below the top of the perlite. You don't want the perlite completely submerged when doing it this way, you want the top 1/2" to 1" "dry" so that it can wick up water from the wet perlite below it.
