Introducing: -=THE PERLITE POUCH=- (patent pending)
    #5286721 - 02/10/06 05:36 PM (17 years, 11 months ago)

Well, I know perlite is messy and a PAIN IN THE ASS to clean up from your tub if you ever want to remove it. But yet, it is crucial to your grows.

I also know that with casings, high humidity during pinning is beneficial for a good pinset, however, too much humidity is bad during the actual fruiting process.

SO, what do you use to easily transport the perlite in and out?

The PERLITE POUCH!

It's very simple to build and can save quite a bit of headache.

All you need is a sewing machine (preferably) and some small mesh screen you get from hardware stores. It's black and used for window screens. If you can find something else with very small mesh, then go for it. Of course, perlite.

Step 1
First, measure the surface area you are going to be using the perlite in. Usually, its the bottom of your fruiting chamber. Be as accurate to about the 1/2 inch.

Step 2
Lets say you have a 12.5" x 16.5" measurement from the bottom of your tub. You are going to want to cut a 13" x 33" piece. (Because you are going to fold and sew the sides. Now notice the photo. That is how I cut mine and it doesn't make it to the sides. If you want more perlite and a bigger bag, simply OVERestimate the size. This screen material is extremely flexible so you can manipulate it as much as you want once inside the tub.

Step 3
Now, go to your sewing machine and sew the two sides of the pouch after folding it in half longways. (If you are not with me, just use common sense and think for a second.) If you DO NOT have a sewing machine, then you CAN line the outside of the bag where you would sew with silicone. You must let it dry for a day though. DON'T get over anxious.

Step 4
Fold it up and soak it in a bleach solution for about 20 minutes. You want to sanitize it. (You can skip this step if you are going to soak the entire bag later with perlite in it.

Step 5
Add your wet perlite. Hopefully you will know how much perlite you will need. If not, measure it first because the amount you put in is not reversable. Wet is easier to work with.

Step 6
Sew the open end closed, (should be opposite of the folded end). Or again, use silicone.

Step 7
Run the bag under water for 10-15 minutes, moving around constantly. (I used the shower. Hell, take a shower with it if you want and kick it around while you are in there. Just make sure you rinse it VERY well to get soap out.) The reason for this is so that all the VERY small pieces of perlite have a chance to escape the VERY SMALL holes in the mesh. Less mess later.

Step 8
Sanitize. Now that you've gotten your pubes in there, you want to make sure and soak this bag in a bleach, alcohol or peroxide solution for a while to kill any bacteria that might inhibit your grow.

And you're done!

You will find this isn't the best invention in the world, but might make handling and transport a bit easier.

Best wishes!

You could probably just sew a zipper on there too so you could replace the perlite and not have to throw out the pouch.
Excellent Idea though

I thought about the zipper. But I didn't know how to sew a plastic zipper in there. I didn't want any type of metal that would corode or rust.

Besides, just cut off the end, put/extract perlite, then resew.

And thanks for the shroomies!

Yea sewing on velcro would have probably been a good idea. I thought of that, but it was snowing like hell and I didn't feel like driving to the store to get velcro. haha.

Even so, I don't see myself NEEDING to open this thing very often at all.

Thanks for all the comments!

I remember a post awhile back where MikeOLogical made a humidification device like this out of a nylon stocking.

Thats actually the FIRST thing I thought of, was to put it in a stocking. However, raising humidity depends on surface area and I didn't figure nylon stockings would have as much surface area as this.

I am glad to see someone else out there that did that. Thanks!

Good Idea man!

I'm still wondering if that thing would be really dusty when handling. I suppose when you first make it you could go outside with a dust mask on and shake the shit out of it to remove most of the dust in the perlite.

I also see no reason to be opening the bag either. Just dunk the bag in a water/h2o2 solution overnight. And it's ready to go again.

Not to knock your invention but I just cut the bottom out of a milk jug and fill with perlite - cheap & simple. Or use an old fast food cup.

Musher, yep, you are right, you must get rid of the dust. That's why I said bring it to the shower and kick it around for a while. Or, rinse it very well before adding it to the sac. And like I said in conclusion, it's not the BEST way. When you rub your hand on it, you will still get small pieces of perlite. But it still makes it much easier.

Raw toxic, as I asid before, it's about SURFACE AREA. A milk jug only has a small surface area, so it won't raise humidity as much as something with a large surface area.

tokey666- umm.. you don't need very much perlite.

IME 1/2 cup can take care of a whole 50 gallon FC of casings.  but the casings themselves also help the rH.

if you want to sit and sew together screen doors be my guest.  i'll be on the couch smoking bong rips

just don't see the need in making something more efficient that is efficient enough already.

your larger SURFACE AREA thanks for the caps, will also dry out faster therefore creating another thing to worry about.

5 shrooms to you anyways.  now invent something to make my girlfriend shut up.

sorry to be the critic.

LMFAO, "now invent something to make my girlfriend shut up" I love it.

I know what you mean about the humidity of casings. You don't need much at all, and you don't really even need this thing much while doing casings in a tub.

However, I use two cat litter pans that completely line the bottom of my tubs. There is no room whatsoever for for a gallon jug. So, this on the bottom is perfect. Then I can remove it once my pinset has formed. No biggie there.

But anyway, I do agree with you completely. For the people who do enjoy building things though, this a great project.
