Ants in my compost?!?!
    #5286242 - 02/10/06 02:51 PM (18 years, 11 months ago)

Is this a matter of concern? I can imagine the thousands of contams on each individual ant; there's a line going in the compost. I don't know what they're eating, the compost is mainly horse poo and straw, with a box of compost starter thrown in. The only food scraps I throw in are coffee grounds. The compost is looking (and smelling) good now. Any ideas?

hmmm... well I'm no expert, but if you haven't pasturized it yet then I wouldn't worry. I mean, when you pasturize it you'll kill any ants in there and make it clean anyways. If it's still composting then of COURSE there's gonna be all kinds of shit living in it... like the bacteria that are doing the composting in the first place.

If the pile is heaped high enough & moist?
It should generate HEAT, that will drive the ants out (or kill them).

Hmmm I'll get to shoveling when it's light out. As for then, I think pasteurization should do the trick.
