i have a bag of vermiculite mixed with BRF powder. all the PF teks i've read say to add a layer of just vermiculite on top of the substrate, but i don't have any vermiculite on its own. is there anything else i can use for the top layer, or should i just go and buy a bag of vermiculite? what will happen if i don't add this top layer?

It leaves you open to contams. If you jars have filter discs and self healing or tapes holes you should be ok. You could put filters over the lids too.

Yeah you really want to have that layer on top. It keeps contams away from your substrate. If I were you I would go buy some vermiculite. You might be able to get away with some tyvek and polyfill but I would just stick with the vermiculite. It is pretty cheep to buy and then you won't have to worry about contams at all.
