How much heat can a spore print take?
    #5284351 - 02/10/06 01:01 AM (18 years, 11 months ago)

I hear a syringe is good to 110 degrees Fahrenheit, What about a print in foil?

Mr. X refuses to build a desiccant chamber for a print. The plan is to Place the foiled print with three of four sides folded, in a ronco food-dehydrator to get the prints all nice n' dry before storage?

How long can a print stay viable in a cool, dry environment while in foil?

Exposing a print (or any part of it) to OPEN AIR, will dramatical increase the chance of it becoming contaminated.

I don't own, nor have experience with a Ronco dehydrator. But, as I understand them. They operate in the 145 / 165F range. And, do not contain a fan of any sort.

So, air movement inside them is caused by heat CONVECTION.

I would not intentionally expose a print to those temperature ranges, or circumstance & retain good faith in their full viability, or complete sterility.

Acctually AGAR, the ronco is rated at 140 degrees and with 7 trays the top tray stays at 104 degrees.

Man I have no idea why the hell you would want to put your prints in a dehydrator before storing them. This is just silly IMO.

Just take the cap off the foil after its dropped its spores, fold up and store - if you want to be sure its dry, take the cap off, leave the print OPEN but COVERED with a glass tumbler for 24 hours, and then just seal and store your print.

From what I gathered from the printing tek this step was necessary, I suppose a shoe box with some desiccant packets would work.

Does this extra drying really even need to be done at all?

Spores can handle up to 122F (50C) without problems whether in a syringe or on a print. This is the temp where the spores begin to deteriorate it's the duration at these temps that will determine the viability of the spores.

You should allow a print to dry.
Because excess moisture will give rise to bacterial growth. :mad2:
Possibly even partial spore gemination. :mad2:

Dry prints store well.
Moist prints DO NOT.

After removing caps, in a G/B.
I cover the trays with loose sanitized A/foil - at least 24 hours.
That does the trick. (at least for me).
