Easy CD-DA Extractor 9.0
hands down the best program I've ever used to rip cd's since record companys started putting protection on the discs.

Exact Audio Copy.
http://www.exactaudiocopy.org/
also download LAME mp3 converter.
Those two will allow the best ripping available.

yes, exact audio copy is what you want. it's free and made for/by audiophiles.
If you have the space, I highly recommend ripping to .flac or another lossless encoding. Why? archiving your music in lossless allows you to convert the files into any lossy format down the road - if mp3 goes out of fashion or if you get into the .ogg format, you wont have to re-rip your collection - you'll always have an archival quality rip that can be coverted to whatever format you want without harming the original file. lossless is a true backup of your cds, while lossy is not. you'll save yourself trouble in the future.
I recommend interfacing with the hydrogenaudio forums
