Horse Poo prep

i'm finally all set to go. sitting before me i have 20 lbs of dry poo from tenn stud, a 10 lb block of coco coir, my usual 4 cu-ft of chunky verm and everything else i'm gonna need. (i even broke down and finally built a GB too!-not that i'll need it for this) so i'm omitting that.
i'm getting ready to mix up my casing material, which will be a breeze to prepare... 'cept i've never used calcium carb and i dunno where to get it (yell @ me if you want)
but this IS my first time working with poo.
i was planning on using Roadkill's (or whoever's) tek - the one recommended on Tenn Stud's site...
but then i started wondering if it wouldn't be better to use Agar's poo preparation tek.
an oven bag (reynolds work ok?) seems like it would be more sanitary and i do like the idea of preparing the poo BEFORE you pasteurize it.
any suggestions?

I love the oven bag tek. WAY cleaner then the pillowcase method.
Takes a while to get the poo up to temp tho. So prepared to stay close to the oven for about three hours or more. Check your temp often. And start turning down the oven at about 160 the temp will continue to rise after.
If your using verm and coir as a casing material calcium carb isn't a requirement. It's only benefit is as a LONG term buffer for Ph. I wouldn't stress about not having it in my mix unless you really want a heap of flushes.
You can get the Calcium carb at pet stores (crushed oystershell) but it can be had for cheaper if you know where to look. You can also use crushed eggshell. Just remove the membrane.
This is the ovenbag tek I follow http://www.shroomery.org/index.php/par/23705
Then I just pick up after the pasturization section of this tek. http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/723303/an/0/page/5

thanks Musher! i figured this would be better than the pillow case (king midas touch to the old tek):)
i wasn't gonna stress on the cal carb. esp since coir actually works as (somewhat) of a buffer to soil mixes...
lemme ask YOU this... do you sterilize or pasteurize your coir/verm mix? or do you not F w/ it at all?
btw, nice avatar mang. i've had the Deftones rockin the bathroom boombox for the last 2 weeks

your casing can be pasteurized, sterilized, or probably used as is. i like pasteurizing mine. i've done coir/verm casings without past/ster and just added some peroxide to the water i hydrated with. all was well. do whatever.

I cased some trays just today.
I made the mix yesterday. I just eyeball everything no need to be really precise.
I took a large microwaveable container. Filled it about 40% full of peat with sticks and clumps removed. Then added what looked like 5% oyster shell. (about 1/20 the amount of peat added. I just use the side or the container to judge.). I then mixed it up then added some verm until the container was about 80% full. I grabbed the coir I had expanded in hot water and added that until the container was full with just a bit of head space. Mixed it up.
Added water until it was a little wetter then you usually want with the squeeze test. Then stuck the container in the microwave for 3 Min's (with lid corner lifted). Took it out and shook it. Threw it back in and let it sit a few Min's. Nuked 3 more Min's, shook. Let it sit a bit. Back in the Mic for another 3 Min's and this time just sat my ass on the couch and let it sit there until this morning when I got up. I sealed it off and threw it on the table until I got home today and did my casing.
Almost forgot, Deftones are great. I really like adrenaline in particular. That album keeps me going driving to school on 4 hours of sleep or in the gym.

oh, damn! i'm an idiot. i just got done looking over the tek you gave me "This is the ovenbag tek I follow- http://www.shroomery.org/index.php/par/23705"
so you use the actual OVEN? if this is Agar's old tek, doesn't he have another oven bag tek where you SIMMER in water (just replacing the pillow case filled w/ dry poo with oven bag filled w/ pre-moistened & drained poo)?
which is better? i'm scared to use the oven.

agar's tek uses an autoclave bag in a pot of water because it heats up faster in water as opposed to the oven's dry heat. you can do it in the oven though too. either way, don't let the water or oven get above like 175 but ideally 140-160.

Yeah either is gonna work as long as you can control the temps. I use the oven because it's pretty simple but does take a while.
Next time I'm going to have to try using the pot of water. Wouldn't surprise me if it's faster. I kinda like the oven tho because if someone pops by it's not as obvious as a contraption on the stove top.

Find a farm supply. Ask for calcium carbonate. If they look at you funny, ask for high calcium lime, the bag should list calcium carbonate in the mid-high 90% range. Magnesium content should be in the 2% area. 40 lb bag will cost 5-6 dollars.
