My first question is if it is okay to order the spores in the mail if it is below freezing. Will they freeze? Die?
Also, will this work as good as perlite? http://www.acehardware.com/product/...hId=10520782783
Thanks.

Perlite is perlite. As for the spores, I dont think its good if thier below freezing. There could possibly be a way to wrap them with insulation. Im not sure.

1) spores will be fine
2) why can't you use perlite? it's super cheap and can be had at any garden section in any chain hardware store. And that link doesn't work right

Rethink growing PF Tek, try reading about WBS (Wild Bird Seed). WBS can be found at acehardware or pretty much anywhere and its much more potent. Oh you need a pressure cooker too. GL

You don't need perlite in a cake. Just the verm.
I'm not sure on that stuff. Not a whole lot of info about it really. It seems to be however that any store selling that stuff would also have just regular perlite, No?

Nope they didnt have any. They "stopped selling it".
So that stuff is what the cake will be in. I'm using the poor man's pod.
If anyone knows if it would work that would help a lot
Thanks.

I went to the FAQ and under humidification techniques I found this. http://www.shroomery.org/index.php/par/25960
If you find out more about that product compare it to a few of those and you will know better. OR if you can't find perlite just search for one of those alternatives.

most soil conditioners have mycorhizea in them, and usually some trace elements and micro nutrients. although these can sometimes be beneficial, if you dont know exactly whats in there you could be sorry. besides that, mycorhizea is usually more that ten different species of fungus combined, and i'd bet money that at least half of them are predatory, or "invasive" to your selected spores. i would follow the above, and just use friggin perlite. if you cant get it locally you can deffinatly get it online. we all know you have the internet, so try and google it.

Thanks for all the help. I have another question.
How long would you say it takes from start to finish for them to be done.

as for your 1st question I'm not sure if they can survive freezing i know they can survive the cold of a fridge it actually preserves them. i would recommend to watch the local weather channel and order them when the temps arnt so low and maybe pay extra for over night delivery or something. if you have a walmart near you then you can get perlite unless you live in the boondocks then the internet is your best bet. and if your growing pf cakes then expect about 2 months for the whole thing to go down.
