Now, does it have to be a 12" sealer for spawn bags, or is a 15" just as good?

12" is the minimum but 15" will work just fine. You really only need 12" though.

this is a stupid ass question i'm just going to ask:
what's the difference between an impulse sealer and the standard vacuum sealers you get at dept. stores?

Actually most 15" sealers are going on ebay cheaper than the 12"... go figure.

Impulse sealers use an electric current to melt the bag, ultimately sealing it. Vacuum sealers suck out all the air before sealing it in a similar manner.

ok. i'm pretty sure that's the same thing i used @ a store i worked at to re-seal boxes. we used a heat-gun. the cellophane-type-shit came on a roll and it was basically a tube. you pulled it thru the sealer and there was a wire that heated up on the lever used to cut/seal the edges. then the heat gun would shrinky dink it.
same thing then?

Probably the same thing but maybe at a higher setting for the cutting action. You definitely don't want too high of a setting or it may just melt the top of the bag off and not seal it properly.

i'm just guessing here, but an impulse sealer is a relatively expensive item?
does anyone just use a vacuum sealer in clean or sterile environments?

An impulse is a specialty items, that is not needed pre say.
It makes a constant fairly quick repetitive seal.
I vacuum sealer, the one I have needs to have vacuum before it will seal, the bags are vented.
But is it can be used with no ill effect.

I was always afraid there would be tiny hard to see holes the impulse left .. so i would fold em over and tape every exposed area.
after awhile i just decided why not leave out the sealing and tape it good ( i was already doing it anyhow)
and now my imuplse has been dormant close to 3 years and i have noticed NO change in contam rate from then till now

you can also use food savers to seal without vacuuming, you just don't stick the end of the bag into the vacuum port

Not true at all. You can buy a brand new 12" sealer for $29.95. I'll only say that the folks at The Impulse Sealers really have great prices. You can figure out the rest.

Yo Bro. Most food saver type vacuum sealers have a heating/sealing element, about the size/width of a human hair (fine copper wire).
Impulse sealers meant for heat sealing autoclave type bags, have a seal about 40 times that width (somewhere between 1/8th & 3/16ths wide.
Also, I have never seen a food saver type sealer that had an adjustable heat range, for the seal. Meaning, you get whatever seal temps it is has. Rather than being able to adjust the sealing temperature.
I would not trust a hair thin food saver type sealer to seal an autoclave bag. Just my opinion.
