i think anything as long as its not a conifer? You want wood that doesnt contain resin as it inhibits mycellial growth. Most commonly used are alder and beech chips.

Anybody ever use the massive bags of aspen bedding chips from petsmart?
Aspen is a type of poplar, I assume it would work, but I'd like to know for sure before I dive right into azures.

Aspen works great. Alder's probably the most popular, but almost any HARDWOOD will work. Hardwood chips for grilling work well, and they don't contain any additives since they are for cooking. Hardwood sawdust "pellets" work too, but were a lot harder for me to find.
