Okay I just made calcium carbonate out of eeg shells by boiling and then grinding them up in a coffee grinder.. How safe is it to use this with my caseing of coco/verm and what would be the ratio..?

Calcium carbonate is more for casings made of peat moss and verm. Coir casings don't need it.

But is says on the 60/40 that you can use it to stabilize the pH...

Just do like half of the ratio needed for the peat based casing layer. You don't need much, but the substrate will start to go slightly acidic after a flush or two, so it would be beneficial to have a little bit.

i read that a trait of peat moss is its acidic nature. i plan to do my first casing when my wbs finishes colonizing, and im gonna use peat/verm mix. will crushed egg shells work to get the ph up?

Yeah, but you'd be better off just buying some crushed oyster shells (another form of calcium carbonate) from the pet store or garden store. Or you could get some hydrated lime, but you've got to be careful, it can burn your shit. I'd advise buying stuff because it'd take a lot of eggshells to get a decent amount of calcium carbonate, and way more work than just buying a bag at the store.

i live right on the ocean and there are oyster beds everywhere... what do you think i could do to make my own crushed oyster? just get the beds and smash em to bits and then pc em?
i advocate the merciless slaughter of innocent oysters.

you will quickly find out that oyster shells will destroy a coffee grinder, or blender.
You need a rock crusher (cone or jaw type), to effectively crush whole oyster shells down to sand/flour size.

The egg shells will certainly help if ground down finely. It doesn't hurt to add something to a coir based casing layer for ph adjustment. Coir is a bit on the acidic side most of the time...

Dr4gon, I bet it'd work. I don't know how crushed up you could get the shells, but it couldn't hurt to try eh? If they're not crushed fine enough, oh well, live and learn.
