Why should people do cakes instead of casings?

I really don't understand why some people prefer cakes to casings; casings are better under every point of view Until now, I didn't get one single failure with casings, and i'm not "perfect" with sterility and such I would raccomend everyone to start casing now and don't waste time and energy with cakes. I say this because I myself wasted time and energy with cakes and i don't want this to happen with you guys. Correct me if I'm wrong!

well, the pf tek was designed for any average joe to do a successful joe-grow. It's pretty simple. PC, inoculate, wait, birth, fan.

cakes can be steamed. I was always told they were far easier but I find casing easier/more successful

I agree but some people just want as little to do with it as possible so they mix it, heat it, inoculate it, and birth it.
they don't want to mess around with getting their hands dirty or "shitty" and don't want to play with hydrating grains or grinding cakes.
i like how it was put.... a joe grow

Well, I am starting out with a batch of cakes for it seemed to me more dummy proof than casings and I don't have a pressure cooker. I do plan to get a pressure cooker and switch to cased rye in the future.

You don't need an pressure cooker for doing casings. If you have fully colonized BRF cakes, the step to case them is a baby step!
Crumble your cakes in an container. Add casing mix.
Done.
Also maintaining a bit lower RH is easier than maintaining a high. And the yield is more with casing. Need I go on?
Search for "casing 101" and Hyphae's "pinning strategy"

I hadn't realized it was so easy. I have 4 cakes growing mycelium now, when they are ready I definitely will try casing a couple of them. I still mean to get a pressure cooker and try the rye substrate next.

cased a quart of wbs ang got 128 gr inoc to fruit in 1 month
did 12 1/2 pint jars some got contams only produced 28 grams per jar inoc to fruit a little more than 1 month
so 12 jars of wbs are as easy to do as 12 cakes 3 casing in the fc at 128 each =374g 9 cakes in the fc at 28 each = 252g
no more cakes for the big man + i like 7" mushrooms alot more than 2" mushrooms

Cakes give you experience and knowledge, crawl before you walk. Some aren't as lucky the first time they try casing. My friend started with PF cakes, later to advance to bulk with much better results.
Cakes are an easy way to get started on the beautiful hobby of mycology.

I think that a few rye failuars would be cheaper and you would learn more than a few pf failuars. Rye is only 18 cents per pound. flour is way more than that. I think that growing on grains will teach you just as much if not more than pf. The frist time I did rye I was 100% contam free. Rye has like 4 less steps in the makeing of a jar than pf tek.

Not to mention casings are alot less of a hassle.
With PF cakes you have to maintain very high humidity--perlite, airstones, heavy misting, etc...
You also have to dunk between each flush!
Now with casings it's more like; set it, and forget it! Well, you still have to mist and fan. And between flushes you CAN dunk if you want, but you can just mist heavily.
EDIT: Don't forget the better yields! =]

It's a way to get people into the hobby. I'm not knocking it for that reason (plenty of other reasons to knock it), it's actually a good thing, least it has been for me. I've bought 2 bags of crushed corn cob, a bag of peat, 2 bags of oyster shell, a bag of calcium carbonate, a bale of straw, a bag of worm castings, 6 bags of assorted compost, 8 mixing tubs, 5 storage tubs, a PH meter, a humidifyer, some screen, 5 sets of quart jars, a 12 quart PC, a garden hose, a paper cutter, 4 cubic feet of vermiculite, quarts of hydrogen peroxide, alcohol, gloves, several types of sealant, several bowls, 60 pounds of wild bird seed, and the list goes on.
It all started when I read that I could grow some shrooms for less than 50 bucks
Plus, PF tek takes up very little space, that's a consideration for many.

You might be rich but 18 cents for one pound of rye dosnet compare to 2$ bag of flour becouse you need like 4 bags just to do 12 pints when it only takes 12 cups wich would be less than a dollars worth rye to do 12 qt jars. I think it is fun for a novilty project but for cant be done for pennys.
