I have had a pet female chinchilla about 1 year, named Silky.
I broke down & bought her a boyfriend (Willy).
Meet Willy.
He likes to play "hide & seek" under the covers.
By the nocturnal goings on in their tri-level cage.
I suspect a few Willy Jr's will arrive in about 3 months.

They're clean, but pet store owners have always told me that they're introverted and generally hate being held by people.

it's true .. they're not much for human contact, although you can get lucky and get one that loves to be held and given massages.
i love my chinchillas, although one of them is spawned from hell.

If you get 6 or 7 month old ones, from a pet store.
You may have some problems. As, they never had much human contact. Meaning, they are afraid of you & being handled.
The female I have came from a pvt party, and was used to being handled. She is a sweetheart & will beg for raisins.

The male I just bought, came from a pet store & bounces around like a kangaroo. But, is calming down.
my intent is to allow them to breed, then HANDLE the youngsters from almost day 5. That way, they will be tame. (hand raised, rather than pen raised)
They are clean, no odor, easy to keep & cheap to feed.
