Humidity/Perlite

Hello,
My PF TEK jars have begun colonizing, so i'm making steps towards making a terranium. I have a humidifier/air exchange unit, primarily to take care of FAE, but also for added humidity - I plan however to use perlite to make up for any humidity that this unit cannot produce, as my (cheap) humidity meter is showing only 80RH at the moment:

my question is, is it ok to put an amount of perlite in a seperate container, such as a jar or tray, and just have it sitting somwhere in the terranium, to provide added humidity rather than linig the entire botton of the terranium with the perlite.
Thanks!
Alex

Yes as long as there is not standing water in the container with the perlite.

Yes, it's fine to either add your perlite directly to the bottom of the FC, or to put it into a bowl/pan, wet it, and set it into your terrarium. Some of the cheap hygrometers will only register a max of 80% RH. Perlite alone should get you above 95% RH, no problem.

ok, thanks for that, one more thing, how long can you 'use' perlite for before it needs to be replaced with fresh stuff? also, do you ever need to 'rehydrate' it and add more water?
thanks

if you add hydogen peroxide to the mix of water in the amount of 10%-15% by volume. it could last you a few grows as long as you don't have contamination outbreaks.

Perlite will lose it's moisture. You can just add more sterilized water with 5% h202 when it dries out. Some people rinse, cook and re-use their perlite several times.

Peace!
