agoutihead said: What the mushroom says about itself is this: that it is an extraterrestrial organism, that spores can survive the conditions of interstellar space. They are deep, deep purple - the color that they would have to be to absorb the deep ultraviolet end of the spectrum. The casing of a spore is one of the hardest organic substances known. The electron density approaches that of a metal. pretty neat i thought.
Not only are those three pieces of evidence purely circumstantial, one of them isn't even true. In general, you can't tell what wavelengths something is absorbing by looking at it with your eyes. There is more than one way to make a deep purple color (as perceived by your eyes)---by absorbing all visible light but purple itself, by absorbing everything but red and blue, etc. Even assuming the most probable situation, that everything except the purple region is absorbed, the spores are reflecting UV light. I don't see how this matters anyway since there are much higher energy things zipping around in outer space than UV photons.
Who measured the electron density of spore shells? That's interesting, I'd like to see that paper.

Shulgin's books are half about the compounds, and half story. The chemical section is only half intense chemistry, the rest is short experience reports and explanations and such.

Anthrax spores can survive in outer space too...are they gifts of the gods or alien treasures? HELL NO.
Spores just have the characteristic of being insanely hard to kill. Thats how they roll.
