My friend is growing on whole grain rye cakes. Mycelium colonizes in the jars, then cakes transferred to a PMP (geolite, bubbler, in a sealed container with holes in the lid) for fruiting.
He noticed that there were two jars he had to throw away recently because the cakes were covered on top with a brown/black powder so light that it seems like dust.
Then, just now, he saw that one of the cakes in the pod was covered with that stuff on the bottom surface (facing the geolite).
Questions - What is this stuff? How does one make sure it does not recur? Does that one contammed cake in the pod mean that all the other cakes in the pod must be destroyed, or can they be salvaged? Also, what sort of sterilization does one have to use on the geolite before it can be reused?
Thanks,
G

That's some sort of mold. It's hard to say without a picture. But, carefully remove it from the healthy cakes. The healthy cakes should be fine until harvest time and then you can clean the excess tissue and spent casing material off the cakes for a rinse under the tap before dunking...

Bump with pics....
He noticed that there were two jars he had to throw away recently because the cakes were covered on top with a brown/black powder so light that it seems like dust.
It could have been just spores.
What is this stuff?
Is this the white stuff that is on your geolite if so I would like to know also.

How does one make sure it does not recur?
H2O2
Does that one contammed cake in the pod mean that all the other cakes in the pod must be destroyed, or can they be salvaged?
Any help here would be apperataed.
What sort of sterilization does one have to use on the geolite before it can be reused?
IMO just rinse geolite with hot water.
What about the stems being flat not round and one had a hole in it they OK? Could it be lack of water and they were small? B+ pf style BTW
