casing layer and even pinset?
    #1984017 - 10/06/03 01:48 PM (20 years, 6 months ago)

This sucks, well not completely but it's frustrating after putting the extra work of straw and dung and getting mediocre results. 3 inches 50/50 poo straw layer cased with 60/40 verm/coir mix. Patched once, then again after it appeared like overlay was going to occur (possibly where things went wrong with the casing layer. I've seen pictures where people had hypahl knots covering the casing and fruitbodies covering it as well. This casing only pinned and grew in about 25% fo the area. HOw important is the casing layer eveness, and when patching is this important too, or would it just be higher in the areas patched or should a whole new thin even layer be applied? Also are those perfect flsuhes I've seen usually be it is an isolate strain? Does that make a huge differece too or does the casing layer just take practice?

Is an even pinset easier with no casing layer?

As long as everything was mixed really well it's probably uneven casing.

Patching is important, but don't patch until you have large mats forming -- the myceliuum should just be allowed to poke through, but it should be poking through evenly throughout the casing surface. This is when to fruit it.

You're using straw, so just press it down a lot before you spawn it so it's flat when it's colonized. Pick out all loose pieces of straw, first. Almost every strain has the capability to fruit well (besides a few strange ones here and there.) IME, it's either the mixing of the casing, evenness of the substrate, evenness of the casing, and, most importantly *when it's fruited.*

Hope that helped (a bit)

yes i think I screwed with the layer too much after fruiting. Thanks this is good advice.
