Casing: When to Initiate Pinning
    #2405583 - 03/05/04 01:51 AM (20 years, 10 months ago)

i've read that you should patch case until you achieve an even layer of mycelium poking through the top casing layer before initiating pinning, but how important is this?

i believe that i read over on mycotopia that hippie cases and then puts it into a fruiting envrionment right away, metioning that the casing layer will colonize quickly enough before it starts pinning. i assume this can be true if the top casing layer is rather thin (maybe 1/4" to 1/2").

which should i go with? i plan on using straight verm for casing.

imo you should use a mix of coir/verm and you should patch until even

i'd say it depends on what you're casing...when you're casing with something like WBS i say lay down the substrate...let the substrate recover in the incubator for a day or two, then case with coir/verm. keep in the incubator for another day or two, even if you don't have a fully colonized casing layer, then initiate pinning. the mycelium will still colonize the casing layer....really it's just a matter of preference though...

Ahh.. once again, check the dates. This baby is less than a month away from it's two-year anniversary.
