weird film on extract

I'm doing a non-polar/polar extraction on MG seeds and I used charcol(sp?) lighter fluid (I'm poor and I figured most hydrocarbons are non-polar, this is kind of an experiment run.) It didn't do to much, very slight brown color when I filtered but no "strings" of anything. So I decide to go on and I used water for the polar solvent. In the water I got a very dark brown solution after leaving it to evaporate it got this weird film on it. It is really light brown and doesn't float on the surface. Just kind of float in the solution. I think this is probably the poisonis part and should remove it, what do you think?

I guess I'm going to remove it. Further updates later.

Well I took it out, it had a weird snot like consistency. I think what happened was that the lighter fluid absorbed into the poison part and when I put it in water it came out. It deffenatly wasn't water soluble so I think it was just poison mixed with the lighter fluid. Looks fine now, dark brown colored. I probably going to take it on saturday. Update to follow.

actually just looked at it again. More shit on top. Smells horrible. Is that normal? I think I'm just going to throw it out and try again with better stuff.

you're gonna kill yourself, do some research first. You cant just use grill lighter fluid... it has to be clean clean fluid which can only be found for fansy lighters or get some chems from a paint store.

Yea, I don't know about the Charcoal lighter fluid. I would guess that there is a nice hardware store about 1 mile from you that has decent solvents that would be better suited (Will evap cleaner). Cheap too, $5 or so for at least a quart. Be safe, don't go dying. Don't cut costs on chems, just think, with the money you just lost on a botched extraction, you could have prob done it right the first time!

you can save money by using grill lighter fluid and use it towards your hospital bill.

Seriously, read over that statement again and tell me what's fundamentally flawed within it.

Can we remove this person from the forums before he dies and it leads back to us. Honestly guy, read and learn what you are doing before you do it.

pretty much all hydrocarbons are non-polar. I figured that charcol lighter fluid is pretty much mostly butane(non-polar CH3CH2CH2CH3) so I thought it would work, I'm not a fucking dumbass. After I removed the film a few days later it came back so I threw it out. I wasn't going to ingest the film. Nowhere did I say that. I have read how to do this quite a few times. Non-polar solvent to remove the poison and a polar solvent to get the good stuff. It was an experiment that didn't work.

We aren't dissing on your chemistry background. Next time, put some of the solvent in a glass dish, let it evap and make sure no residues are left. That is the best way to be safe.

It did evaporate clean, It just absorbed and binded with something inside is I think.

I think you misunderstood me, before using any solvent that you plan to evap in an extraction, put some of the solvent all by itself in a glass container. Let it evaporate. Check by looking closely to see if it leaves deposits or residue. (Hold up to a light source if needed) If it does leave anything behind, it is not a good idea to use it. Because as I am sure you know, the extraction will retain the remnants of the poor quality solvents. This can be bad stuff like benzene I believe. Just be careful, don't gamble with your health.
