Could a mushroom be lethal?

Hello everyone nooB here with a very important question.
A few weeks ago I took a trip up to the Fresno area to visit some relatives. After a few rainy days (they've had lots of rain this season), we took a trip to the mountains for some 4x4'ing. A 2 hour drive up the mountain later, we got to a secluded part of the area where they do their thing. I went for a walk in the woods I noticed small patches of shrooms slightly poking through the snow. They looked very much like shrooms, being gold in color, having thin wavy stems with medium sized caps, and growing in clusters of 4-10 shrooms. I remember seeing lots of cows roaming the mountainsides as we were going up the mountain. Even in areas where I personally thought it would be extremely dangerous for a cow to be. However, being covered in snow, and me not wanting to dig around to see what they were growing out of, I was unable to identify exactly what they were growing out of.
Here is my main question. I know certain species of shrooms can be dangerous to consume. But what amount? I have a friend who shrooms pretty much daily and he would definately be able to tell me how potent they are, but I don't want to kill the guy! I'm hoping you could help me out with the description I have. Thanks!

don't fuck with shrooms unless you know for 100% sure what they are!
there is no way that it is a good idea to give him the mushrooms to try, yes one mushroom could probably kill you if its the wrong kind.
don't risk it man!

I really suggest growing your own, if you get a death cap or another poisonous mushroom you will most likely suffer a slow and painful death over the period of 3 days. If you really must pick in the wild take someone who can positively identify them (such as a seasoned mushroom hunter or mycologist). Don't risk it!

Thanks a lot guys. Appreciate the advice. Just one thing, how does one go about getting started learning? When I first started with growing my own herbs, I read "the grow guide" on another website (wouldn't want to name it here). Is there anything like that here. A step by step guide to growing your own shrooms. Everyone here seems like seasoned veterans and I feel stupid even asking these questions.

It's not stupid dude! Everyone is a noob at some point. It would be stupid of you NOT to ask these questions and try it all out on your own.
First off, I'd say figure out what species of psychoactive mushrooms grow in your area. Psilocybe Cubensis has an EXTREMELY wide distribution, and will definitely be the easiest one to identify. You say that there were cows there, that's a good sign... you said their was snow... that raises a few doubts...
Anyways, yeah, go over to the hunting section and SEARCH FIRST for all threads dating back 10 years until now that have "Fresno" or "California" or "Cali" I guarantee you'll find a post with a few psychoactive species named in them. Write down their Genus and Species names (ya know, that latin mumbo jumbo) and then look them up in a field guide, online, wherever you can. Also find out if these species have non-active or toxic lookalikes.
Become familiar with mycology terminology... learn what the difference is between gills that are attached or not-attached, between caps that are convex and concave... etc. And learn how to take a spore print.
After you do all that you should be a little closer to not killing yourself looking for a trip...

if you get stuck on little things (like the ridiculous usage of abbreviations) then just get on the chat and ask. you can get an answer right away. works awesome for me.

i doubt any hallucinogenic mushrooms grow in cold temperatures... most of them grow in tropical environments, not mountainous/high altitude environments...

Since you are on the west coast, you should know that you aren't going to find the type of mushroom that grows from cow manure. Psilocybe Cubensis and Copelandia Cyanescens don't grow where you live. You need to research the wood loving species that live in your part of the world. And do it well. There are some look-a-likes that will kill you.

Mushrooms are some of the most poisones plants known to man, you seriously don't want to grab a mushroom that you swear was a shroom and is a early stage destroying angel mushie.

Thanks a lot guys for all your help. I think I'm gonna do some research on growing my own versus hunting down wild ones. Just not so familiar with these little guys as of yet. I found the Grow Guide I was looking for after a thorough search (huge website!), and am impressed. After a few hours of reading I'm pretty sure I know the basics of growing my own shrooms. I'm gonna do some more reading, and looking at other people's grows before I dive into it myself however. Again thanks for all your help and if you by any chance have any other useful links, please feel free to post them up. I'm eager to learn!
