Troubles.

I am having trouble with my WBS jars.
They are looking great for 7 days. Looking very Rhizmorphic... then all of a sudden Whammo!
Fermented Apple smell. the tops of the colonized mycellium strarts to turn to a yellowish hue. and has a sour smell.
I hate fermented grains. There is nothing wrong with my LC, i also have 1/2 pt cakes growing with no prob.
*** i think it's the Tyvek. i have had alot of troubles ever since i've been using that stuff. I think i am gonna go back to polyfill lids, and see if that's what's up. Seems like i am getting a pooling of water/condensation between my jar lid, and the polyfill.
this is good breeding grounds for bacteria. will hopefull post some pics for ya'll to see.
(feel free to coment if you like)

Sounds like excessive moisture in the jars. (which lead to bacterial BS happening).
Drain the WBS much longer, if you innoc with LC. (rids WBS of excessive moisture)

Sometimes. It's a bitch to get rye or any single grain moisture content right.
That is why I prefer a mixture of grain/seeds, as in WBS for spawn.
At least to me. A mixture is more forgiving about moisture content.
With a mix, some retain more moisture, while others retain less.
That seems to balance out, better than any single grain.

good advice... but guess what?!
i came home to my rye jars with the same contamination.
It's like a lipstick, pinkish... sometimes orange.
foot smell.. Grrr....
**** i am following advice down to a T, (with the exception of inoculation) my 1/2pt's do great, but my grains suck.
i have bbeen innoculating in front of the oven, because it gives me more room to move around. My girfriend thinks this is the cause of my problems, because of the fact that i am breeding the bacteria at 150 degreese not killing them.
I am going back to my glovebox. we'll see what happens.

do you use a still-air glovebox??

4 words:
Self healing inoculation points
Sounds like it could seriously cut down on the amount of contams, especially since you mention the between the poly fill lid and tyvek part. Put some silicone on your inoculation holes and you shouln't have so many problems due to inoculation.

The troubles were all in the LC.

Hey oatman,
i realize this is a little after the fact, but i've been having similiar problems with similiar set-ups and i was interested in what the answer to your problem was. what was wrong with your LC?
if you could elaborate a little i may be able to benefit.
Thanks. Peace

LC got contamed with Lipstick mold.
Babybottle was a bad idea. i didn't secure it properly.
that's why i made this!

Courtesy of Agar, for the design and ingredients.
Also I used just karo in my last LC, in this one i used Light Malt Extract, and Dextrose
can be substituted with LME/Honey or LME/karo
makes this

the myc starts to clump the sediment together, if i had a stirplate it would resolve this problem... just came in mail today.
either way, swirl that baby up, and you have LOTS of LC !!

funny thing, i'm frustrated with the baby bottle tech too and recently i made a jar lid similiar to yours. I don't have the tubing for the poly fil, just a whole jammed with polyfil. then for the silicon injection i just put a huge dob on both sides, no fancy little holder thing like you got(that blue thing). anyway i figure this is better as it's never loosed lid like the baby bottle.
i knocked the grains up on the 5th of may, waiting to see if i've solved the problem with the changes. i also went with a more dilute sugar solution. using 3 grams of karo and 2 grams of light malt for a 200 ml solution. so like 2.5%.
the LC looks very nice (as it alwasys has) but we'll see if the jars stall.
thanks for your input.

Popcorn has worked well for me. The air between the kernals seems to help. I haven't tried tyvek yet, but polyfil hasn't failed me yet.

tubing can be found at autozone... windshield washer hose.
this keeps it from getting wet with nutrients

yeh i guess i should try implementing the tubing into my LC vessel, not because i think it will solve my problem but because it will be so easy to add.
you really think it matters if the inside of your polyfill gets some nutrients on it?
plus does the tubing really keep it completely free from nutrient? i mean if you shake it hard enough or even in PC process i wouldn't be surprised if juices fly into the inside end of your tubing and land on your polyfill anyway.
but whatever ill do it just to eliminate doubt. even though its an additional complication.
I assume you seal the tubing into the lid whole with some silicone?
thanks for your efforts oatman

yup, silicone...
try and not to shake it... swirl it, or even better
get a magnetic stirer.
