Casing Layer Flat vs. Ridged
    #5273734 - 02/07/06 02:33 PM (17 years, 11 months ago)

A foaf did an experiment with his Casing layer on his last two wbs spawned to poo casings. One he laid on flat, and the other, he made little ridges lengthwise. I read that shrooms love the second example, but could not find much info on this. Has anyone tried this?

You will see a painfully slow casing layer if it gets packed down too tight--primordia have an easier time forming in valleys where the moisture is more abundant.

"Drop" the casing mix in, don't pack it in. Make it as level as possible, as to promote an even pinset.

There's no advantage to a ridged casing layer like that, but there are major benefits to making sure the casing is fluffy, not packed.

laying it on loose and airy, with "little valley" kinds of things every where is good for pinning because it encourages a humid micro climate in and around the casing layer. flat surfaces are often compressed flat. they also lack the surface topography that is more conducive to proper humidities.

So my Foaf smoothed one of his casings flat with a large sterilized spoon. It is safe to say it is somewhat packed. Will this cause any problems other than delayed pinning?

We don't know how hard it's packed, no one can give you an answer. It can do more than delay pinning; a packed casing mix can destroy a pinset almost completely. Two tiny shrooms later, been there, done that.

Absolutely no ridges bro! That would defeat the whole purpose of perfecting your pinsets. Level is where it's at and more importantly even in thickness. Although your casing is "flat" there will be minute mountains and valleys, remember this is mycology as in micro-climates. Read my pinning strategy to better understand whats up bro. GL
