Sterilizing and pasteurizing... confused!

I've searched and read posts where people discussed sterilizing and pasteurizing, but I still can't figure out the difference. The best I can come up with is that sterilizing is done in the PC and pasteurizing is done by baking? But then again, other people mention using a microwave, etc.

Bottom line: What I need to do is make my 50/50 verm/ peat mixture never smell like a combination of scotch and feet again. What's the best way for me to do this?

Sterilizing

Pasteurization

You want to Sterilize the 50/50 mix, nuke it for 3-5 min then stir and then 3-5min again, don't open till cool and ready to use

Simple answer:

Sterilizing is what happens when you (hopefully) remove all microbial life from a substrate. It is usually done in a pressure cooker or autoclave. 15psi for 75 min is what I do for quart jars of casing.

Pasteurizing is what happens when you kill unwanted microbial life, such as mold and nasty bacteria, in a substrate. Beneficial microbes are left behind. This can be done by cooking at 170 for an hour or so (although I do it for longer).

If you have a pressure cooker, use it. Otherwise, there are other methods of sterilizing and pasteurizing. Search the board.
