Hey I got somethin for all you inpatient newbies like myself. If you go look at your jars 100X a day like me, sometimes it's hard to tell if you've had a little growth over a few days. So you can take a sharpie and outline your mycelium growth on your jar. It's stupid and crazy I know but u really can see more of a difference. I probably wont be so excited about growth in jars a yr from now huh?

Been thought of and done already, but, its really only helpful if you're experiencing truly slow growth and you want to see if your jars have stalled or not. Otherwise you just end up with a jar covered in sharpie marker.
Its quite easy to not check on your jars, just put them in a place thats hard to access, or make it a bitch to go look at them.

Same here. The first couple days I couldn't stop looking. Finally I decided my incubator would live in the back of my closet under a couple things.

checking 10 times a day is not excessive exposure to light.

Not at all. But it lends to the whole "a watched pot never boils" scheme of things.
It's really best to just forget about your jars, or stick them in a hard-to-get place like coda said. If you keep checking all the damn time, then it'll seem like nothing is happening at all. But if you go on with your life, get your daily shit done, and stop worrying about them so much, when you finally do check them, you get a nice surprise when you see how much they've colonized.

i prep my jars...put em in the terranium then dont check on em for a week or so. its great....this time i came back and found that four of the jars were already 70-80 percent VISUALLY colonized. needless to say, i was very happy. patience does play a huge role in this hobby though.

I swear that after reading the title to this post, I came in here thinking that someone was trying to grow mushrooms in the hospital or drug rehab facility! (In-patient).
