Wild mushrooms in NJ?
    #5269996 - 02/06/06 03:46 PM (18 years, 1 month ago)

Is it common to find magic mushrooms in central New Jersey? I read a little bit about hunting and it says that they grow mostly in southern states. Would I be able to find them in the woods near my house? I live in Carteret, NJ if anyone's ever heard of it.

Psilocybe graveolens is the only psilocybe mushrooms said to grow in NJ. I'm not sure if it's active or not, I don't think it is though.

The horse poo mushrooms from Philly were almost certainly Panaeolus subbalteatus. Pan subbs are very common around the world, and their favorite habitat is horse poo.

The chances of finding that graveolens species is very slim, I would stick to looking for subbalteatus. Seen them in the state before - subbalteatus that is. I have some relatives that live in north jersey, so I visit the state once in a while. Also found a wide range of edibles in the woods.

ooo really... thats interesting i dont know much about all the different species so i listened to him when he said liberty. however i have heard of Panaeolus subbalteatus. I was gonna go mushroom hunting but found out that it can be a little dangerous with species look alikes which turn out to be poisonous.

If you can get pictures and descriptions, the people here can help you. Panaeolus is fairly easy to recognize to at least genus and separate from potentially dangerous species.
