    #5271576 - 02/06/06 10:02 PM (18 years, 11 months ago)

I just checked my incubator and the temp was at least 100
They are B+ 48 hrs old, no sign of spawn - are they ruined?

Make sure that you remove what you are growing from the heat! Check to see if it is dried out. If so, you can inject some sterile water to rehydrate.

If you have any more of what you used to inoculate, you could re-inoculate, just to be sure.

I would say that there is a good chance that your inoculate was killed, but this depends on the volume of substrate.
Good luck.

Thermal death happens around 106 so u might b ok. Just try to get your temp back down to about 82

Oh yeah, Paul Stamets establishes a thermal death limit of 106F. If the center of the substrate (not necessarily the incubator) reached 106, then your inoculate has died.

Edit: Sorry for the duplicate post about thermal death.

106 is for mycelium right? What is thermal death for spores? I'm not even sure if there would be un-germinated spores after 48 hours, or what temps would affect hydrated spores as opposed to dry spores.

never rehydrate your cakes, more often then not you will end up with contams because of it.

If it was multi-spore inoculant , you're fine .

I believe a spore syringe is OK to about 122 degrees F .

Think about it . How hot does it get in the summer when syringes are shipped ? You should be fine .

Yep 122F. (50C) is where thermodeath limits are for spores, 106F. for myc. Now remember this is where death begins it's the duration at these temps that makes the difference.

I did not know there was a difference for spores and mycelium, but it should have been obvious to me. :banghead:
Sorry.
