I spent alot of time on the Haight back in the touring days. It was the hippy connection point. If you arived in San Fran you could go there and find out by word of mouth were all the family was spread out. It was also the only place I witnessed somebody getting shot to death. It's a shady scene.

yeah its kinda seedy, a couple people asked to play my guitar and im think they probobly would have just walked of with it had i let them.
It was more for the history of the place, not what it is now.
They have some quality glass shops on that street though, lots of em.

It is really neat walking down the Haight though(and GGP) It's holy ground for the counterculture. Ground Zero!!! Our Mecca or Bethlehem or Bohdi tree. Today it's full of violence but it still has the vibe that something happened long ago that changed the course of history. Long ago in another lifetime when my friends and I would finnish our laying for the night we would take a bag of nugs and head for the haight. Walk down the street and into GGP. You could still taste the cosmic radiation in the air that exploded decades before.

dmanit your good with words bro truly it blows my mind you hit the nail on the head. haight may be a stanky sespool filled with punks and crack heads. but the entire area has this bittersweet aura that makes you feel at home even if its the nastyest fucking place you have ever seen.

Yeah, we dosed then walked into the park. We chilled over by hippy hill for a few then walked the haight. I sat and played guitar and people watched for a while on the top of some huge stone steps that led into this crazy overgrown park on a hill.

well in honor of this thread, here is a poem I wrote after a mushroom trip in the city...
You can take the Berkeley bart, rocket westward under bend of bay past Star Wars droids, past Chinese tankers. Top speed for twenty minutes, then step outside into the largest work of art you?ve ever seen.
Someone, some golden race of people handcrafted this city, so that today you can get high and wander through its rapid-fire districts? its embarcaderos and its haights, endless blocks of human strata. No map or destination here?you?ve reached it? And the city pulls you along?
Much madness has spun itself off these simmering terraced acres? rainbow arcs exploding out to stoke up coals in the greater world. Echoes of Kesey, Garcia still ring off the wood-carved houses some sixty years old.
You?re not a tourist here, you?re an explorer. rolling through a densely packed maze of novelty. minutes off the bart you see the diamond-cut tap dancer the crack-addicted chess the newspapercase drummer, hello everybody! the mad artists brimming with wrought iron plans? the overripe scholars descending from privelage. The air is heavy but you feel at ease as the city pulls you along.

Very nice!! There is no place in the world like San Francisco. I have been in every city in the US and many, many other country's. Some realy beautiful places with liberal people( like Amsterdam), but there is no place on this planet like San Francisco.

Yeah Marin is nice. Northern California rocks. I would never live in San Francisco agian. The energy gets to much and now that i'm a family man with kids I wouldn't want them growing up right in the city. I will probably settle down when i'm done with my PhD and live in Marin or a little north. Retire to the mellow hills with my friends and family and still be close to the city.

I need to visit you guys, out there on the West Coast. Maybe, in the future sometime, we will all meet. Definitely in the next plane, but hopefully, in this one, too. It sounds magical, your descriptions of this great city!
