haikus can be so that is seven-five-seven and some have free verse
a good ol' haiku is just as you say it is 17 sonants
when translating these the meaning is destroyed and in this postmodern world haikus can be written however one wants, regardless the consequences. But just so you know: haikus "should" contain two images, movement, and traditionally a twist. This is how most good translators translate from foreign languages, this is how Kerouac wrote his, e.g.: "Frozen in the birdbath A leaf." And this is how Shiki is translated: ?In the abandoned boat, the hail bounces about.?
I predict the thread will get all crazy and shit now with this knowledge.

In addition, in traditional haiku there isn't really an "I" or a "you." Haikus usually deal with a moment in time and space, a happening. Of course the poetry comes from the author's perception, but one should breathe as little personal subjectivity into a haiku as possible
for example, a classic (not 5-7-5 due to being translated from japanese):
As Cherry Blossoms fall The temple is glimpsed Through twigs and branches
While there is a point of view implied in the poem-as someone is clearly doing the glimpsing-the impact of the human ego is brought down to a minimum. This is why traditional Japanese arts reflected a very zen nature. Simply trying to capture a moment as it happens outside of your own mind.
