This is my first time to grow. Ive read as much as I can. I will summarize what Ive done so far then tell you what I have planned. Any suggestions on improvements or pitfalls to avoid will be greatly appreciated.
I have innoculated 10 half pint jar of brown rice with spores from a print from Homestead. I pressure cooked them using the standard techniques for cleanliness. I recently recieved my "puerto- rican" spore syringe from sporeworks. I mixed some honey and water and filled 2 half pint jars with it and put some homestead spores in one and the puerto rican spores in the other. I hope to make a mycelium soup which i can use to innoculate autoclavable bags of substrate.
question-- where to get the bags? second.. what is the best substrate to use? i was planning on using millet/rye flour/ vermiculite mix. what about adding bird seed, hay or grass?
once the bulk substrate material is completely colonized I plan on putting them into several 4 inch tall trays, that are around a square foot in area. ill put a half inch layer of vermiculite down first to help hold excess moisture. then the 2 inches of spawned substrate. Question- what changes would I have to make if I wanted to use add the spawn to more uncolonized bulk substrate at the casing step? I will case with an inch of sterilized jiffy mix.
I will put these trays inside bigger trays with a few inches of water to help humidity. Ive read that once fruiting begins you can drill a hole into the substrate and insert a straw and periodically add water to increase yield. any tips on how often and the amount of water I should use?
How many hours of lighting do the mushrooms need to fruit.

Oh ya, at this depth of substrate, how many square feet will i need to produce a pound of dried mushrooms?

one note i can tell you, is that you shouldn't make a mycelium soup.
Mixing the strains is not a good idea, and will just be a problem from the start.
Grow each strain individually.

Thanks for the reply. Maybe soup was a bad way to describe it. I didnt mix the strains in the honey/water mix, they are in seperate half pint containers. but i was thinking about mixing some in the jars. but now i wont mix the strains.

oh and you also may want to do some HEAVY research on Puerto Ricans and pinning/overlay probs if you are planning to case them, as they have a seriously wierd pinning inducing strategy, which I have yet to master

could you elaborate on the pinning stategy. Do they require cold shocking or something? Also, how do you select the cool avatars? later-

do a search on puerto ricans. i know there is a recent thread started by hollywood that has excellent info that is specific to puerto ricans and some problems you may encounter.
