Preserving in honey...
    #5269116 - 02/06/06 11:33 AM (17 years, 11 months ago)

I know it's good to put dry fruits into honey, but is it cool to throw some fresh shroomies in a jar of honey. I don't know if the honey will preserve them that well if they are still wet.

You shouldnt be putting shrooms in honey to preserve them. They might rot or just make a really gross mushroom flavored honey drink. Properly dried shrooms should last for a couple years. If you have fresh shrooms dry them out. They will last.

Hey Pingasa, people have successfully stored dry mushrooms in honey before.

I really can't say how they would do wet though. I imagine it could work if Egyptians used it to preserve human bodies.

Try pickling the wet mushrooms if you want to preserve them.

I'm just guessing here, but I have a jar of pickled mushroom {non active} that has lasted for over a year, I just tried one and it tastes great

Don't put fresh shrooms in honey. The water will mix with the honey, bacteria will grow, and fermentation will make the mixture poisonous...

And as for dry shrooms in honey? I don't recommend it. I tried putting over an ounce in honey and after a few months the honey turned cloudy and gross looking. I put it in the freezer and kept it for another year and have eaten the shrooms out of it twice.

Well, I didn't actually eat them, I turned them into tea. They worked, I tripped. But dosing accurately is pretty much impossible, and the tea has to be super concentrated with honey unless you want to gulp down a bunch of it. It's a very sickly, sweet-shroomy flavor...

Honestly I wish I had just made sure they were cracker dry and then put them in an airtight jar in the freezer. That way I could still eat them in different ways or powder them and put them in capsules.

I'm pretty sure that the honey turning cloudy is just a result of the honey being that cheap store-bought stuff. I hear that this doesn't happen with natural, organic honey... but I can't speak from experience.

So yeah, my advice, don't do it unless you got a bunch of shrooms you want to play around with. Just get them cracker dry and keep them in a cool dry place and they will last for years!

Well, I wouldn't store my shrooms, wet or dry, in honey either. I dry them cracker dry in the dehydrator, then grind them up in a coffee grinder and store them in mason jars. I also toss in one of those silica packets that come inside of food and medicine bottles to keep things fresh. No need to store them in the freezer, just a cool, dark place. I still have the best trips ever off of a jar I grinded up over 6 years ago. The best part about the powder is that you can do whatever you want with it. You can make tea, put it into capsules, sprinkle it onto a burrito, blend it into a smoothie or whatever else you can think of. Just weigh out the dose ahead of time.

This also makes the potency even.

thanks guys...
I'll probably throw some in organic honey after I dry them out. I've got a bit of a surplus right now, and I do enjoy psychadelic honey.

Pickling them sounds pretty interesting. Not that appetizing, but might be worth a try...

I got this from Mushroom John
Quote:

There are many different ways to prepare magic mushrooms for human consumption. However, the organic method is probably the most popular means employed. Psilocybian mushrooms are either eaten fresh (which supposedly produces the most powerful and intensely visual experience), or dried and consumed at a later date. Some users freeze their mushrooms for later use, while others put them in capsules. Freezing the mushrooms for later use is not recommended. Mixing psilocybian mushrooms in milk or fruit shakes (known as mushroom smoothies) or tea are also common methods employed by those who dislike the natural taste of the mushrooms. Cooking the mushrooms in a soup, stew or omelette to alleviate the acrid taste of psilocybian fungi is also popular. Other methods include serving the mushrooms on toast with jam or honey. Chocolate and honey were served with magic mushrooms by Aztecs priests during Montezuma's coronation and at other Aztec festivals and celebrations. However, it is best to eat the mushrooms on an empty stomach. The mushrooms may be rinsed carefully in water, but it should be mentioned that psilocybin is water soluble and some lose some of the active ingredients. Remember, psilocybin and psilocin are controlled substances.

A dehydrater is one of the best methods for drying fresh picked mushrooms. However, if a dehydrater is not available then the best method for drying mushrooms is as follows: at home, place several sheets of newspaper on a table or in a high dry area. Separate and spread the mushrooms evenly across the newspaper and make sure that they are not touching one another. After 2-3 days the mushrooms will have shrunk down to virtually nothing. This occurs because the mushrooms are approximately 95% water. The color of the mushrooms will also change as they dry. After a few days, handle a mushroom specimen to see if it has completely dried. It may feel rubbery but in no way will it break apart like a fresh stem would.

Next turn the oven on to 350 degrees and let it heat up. After 20 minutes turn the oven off and crack open the oven door until it stays cracked open. Let the oven cool off for no more than five minutes. Next place the dried mushrooms on several layers of newspaper and place them into the oven leaving the door cracked open. In twenty minutes remove the mushrooms from the oven and let stand in the air for ten minutes. Store the dried mushrooms in glass bottles with a rubber gasket and seal. This will insure that the potency of the mushrooms will remain for years to come. Also keep them away from direct light and heat. Do not store the mushrooms in honey.

The mushrooms may then be eaten as is, or ground up into a powder and placed into double-ought geletin capsules for later use. Dosages vary within each individual species of mushroom and care should be taken when experimenting with entheogenic mushrooms. Dosage for the home grown mushroom Psilocybe cubensis and/or Psilocybe subcubensis is from 1 to 5 grams (dried), and from 1 to 2 ounces (fresh). This would be approximately 1 to 2 big mushrooms weighing 1 fresh ounce or from 5 to 25 small mushrooms weighing up to 1 fresh ounce. Dosage for Psilocybe semilanceata has been reported to be from 10 to 20 mushrooms fresh weighing approximately 1/4 to 1/3 of a fresh ounce and from 1 to 2 grams dried. Dosage for Psilocybe stuntzii, Psilocybe pelliculosa and/or Psilocybe silvatica is 20 to 40 fresh mushrooms or 2 to 3 grams dried. Dosage for Psilocybe cyanescens, psilocybe baeocystis and Psilocybe azurescens is 1 large mushroom or 2 to 3 small specimens.

When consuming fresh or dried mushrooms, it is better to take them in the evening on an empty stomach. Avoid bright lights because they will divert from the visuals effects for which the mushrooms are famous. The darker the room, the more visuals one may experience. Consume the mushrooms over a 15-20 minute period and the experience will commence within 15 minutes up to half of an hour. The slow emergence to the come on of the experience is so much more tranquil and relaxed. When consumed in the form of tea or liquid, the experience will commence within 5 to 10 minutes and could be compared to the effect of a rocket during lift-off.

If should be mentioned that there is just as much psilocybin in the caps of the mushrooms as there is in the stems. I mention this because I have observed people who eat the cap and throw away the stems.

Some individuals have reported that strychnine is present in psilocybian mushrooms. This is not true. Freshly picked psilocybian mushrooms will not make anyone sick. Do not abuse this earthly treasure and the treasure will not abuse you. Be cool and safe and enjoy that which you have just learned and experienced.

BTW... I'm I the only one that likes the taste of shrooms straight?

Um, it will not ferment as the suger content will be much to high (you use about 4 pounds of honey to a gallon of water to make mead) and honey is antiseptic so no bacteria either..

i dunno, all im saying, is i have attempetd to preserved mushrooms in honey, i was under the impression putting dried mush in honey and letting it site would turn the honey purple and packed with the good stuff and can then be used on toast or whatever, i asked about fresh they said theyve never tried it and didnt know, so i had some dried in there then later put a couple small fresh ones in, over a month they honey wasnt purple and smelled bad, but i wanted to try it anyway so i put some on toast it was gross as hell, about 20 mins later i infact did trip, not very long as all, mainly visuals no body high or geeks much, and maybe a half hour or so later i constantly vomitted, i dunno, its hard to explain, i did trip, but i got incredible sik and felt horrible, it did feel like i was poisoned so i wouldnt fuck with honey,

Ive had a lot of experience with keeping fresh mushrooms in honey - and for me it worked ok, if you then put them in the fridge.

I used to put shrooms in a jar then pour the honey in on top - then you can pick out the shrooms and just eat them all covered in the honey - which is rather tasty. But a lot of the active stuff does seem to go in the honey and you cant possibly eat it all in one sitting as its too sweet. Sometimes they were potent, sometimes they werent. It varied dramatically.

The bottom line for me was - it worked ok when I first started to hunt mushrooms and didnt know any better, and then I discovered drying. There is simply no comparison. Id never even dream of storing them any other way now.
