Vapor in Jar - CONTAM? (pics)
    #5268424 - 02/06/06 03:11 AM (17 years, 11 months ago)

I opened up my Rye Jar, which I used to perform some g2g inoculation a few days ago, and vapor came out ,which immediatly made me think "contam!"

i tried to smell it but did not smell anything, but I also had a face mask on. I can barely see through the jar but I dont see any discolorations or smell any odors. anybody know if this is a sign of contam or not? I looked at the other jars that were inoculated by this one and they look normal and have colonized quickly.

the dark spots on the bottom of the jar are edges of ryeseed.

Vapor or dust? If it is dust(=very small particles) then those are mold spores.

When I initially opened the lid I saw vapor coming out. OR what looked like vapor. Its like in the movies where a scientist opens up a beaker and vapor-like smoke ocmes out of his beaker of potion or whatever. I closed the lid and when I reopened it to take those pics the vapor was gone.

do you live in a dry region? and is it warm? Only reason I could think for "vapor" would be a vast difference in the humidity on the inside of the jar vrs the atmospheric humidity. If thats not the case might have been mold spores.

There's mold spores stuck to the inside of the jar everywhere. Disgard of that jar and stop opening it. The vapor you're talking about are mold spores flying around like mad. Not good...
