Stuck on what to do about heating

Well as my other posts have stated, I am going to attempt my first grow. I am still undecided on how I will heat the jars during incubation. I am aware of the current methods : TiT and heating pads. I was wondering if there were any alternative methods? Both of those seem to risky for me. My water heater is small and is covered up, so I cannot put them on top of that. I wouldn't dare put my jars over my frig because I always have company. Could someone please tell me alternate ways of achieving the temperatures in a safe, and cost efficient way?

Well what temperature do you keep your house? You don't actually have to incubate jars, you're perfectly fine leaving that at room temp during colonization, so long as it's not too much colder than 70s or so. Or perhaps you can find a cupboard or closet or something that seems warmer than the rest of the house; then wrap them in a blanket and put them there.

heating pad has worked miracles for me. put the jars in a shoebx or something, close the box and put the heating pad overtop of it. do not wrap it around, you do not want the heating pad to touch the bottom of the shoebox where the jars are sitting. i have a thermometer in mine that says its 83 degrees. i keep it on med temp and switch it to low for a couple hours every once in a while. this is my first grow and i had them just chiling in my drawer at room temp and nothing at all happened and then a week later i tought of this heating pad idea and in 3 days there was myc all over all 4 of my jars, none got contaminated

if you let them sit around 70 they will colonize very slow and there will be a higher chance of contaminations due to the length of time they sit to colonize. but i did it my first time and got lucky... now i use TiT, just a small one with a small fish tank heater. TiT is a very good investment...

tub in tub is the way to grow. if stealth is a problem just buy one that isn't see through. and make sure your fish tank heater is run from the back so it doesn't look suspicious.
good luck.

They will take maybe a week longer, but it does not increase the liklihood of contamination. RR has stated that he always colonizes his jars at room temp, claming incubators are more trouble than they're worth. And I mean, if it good enough for RR, it's good enough for me.

Heating pad UNDERNEATH a metal file cabinet - works great. Unplugged fridge or freezer in a room temp room also works great.

I had same problem first time. It took more then 2 months to colonizate on a room temp. I risolved in this way: I made heatbomb, and then I put all jars(6) in a nylon bag with heatbomb. Then I sealed it with a tape, and covered with 2 more nylon bag. Since there is not air circulation, soon the temperature became optimal(>25 C), and colonization became much faster. hint for heatbomb: use a half litar plastic bottle(small one) because it warms to a higher temp then big one. I just couldn't bring a bigger bottle to a high temperature(maybe my tank heat sux?) good luck

Jars in a small box on top of the fridge don't exactly scream LOOK AT ME! I can't see how that would look suspicious. Now if you live with your parents, that's a different story.
