Heh, yeah... assuming I didn't have a gun and a criminal did, I'd certainly let them have my stuff too.
The problem is that there's no guarantee they won't shoot you anyways. That bothers me. I'd rather plug them first if I have the chance.
And, since myself i'm horribly clumsy with knives, I would never trust myself to use one for defense. But that's just me
By the way, I like your knife. How long is the blade?

Its wicked. I saw it at a liquor store(the ghetto , go figure) and just bought it on impulse. Its my favorite knife.

It's a beauty.
If I saw somebody pull out that knife, you can be sure I'd be looking for an escape route immediately.

So... as soon as this lousy state of california will let me have my concealed weapons permit, I'll try to carry a small caliber pistol with me when I have to walk somewhere at night. You don't need a BIG gun or anything, you just need one big enough to scare a criminal, or in a worst-case scenario one big enough to have the stopping power required to force them to turn and try to flee.
And, if you've shot them where you should have they will eventually need to go to a hospital, where the doctors will legally be required to call the police (gunshot wounds must be reported). And, that makes it easier to catch them for their crime, if you report it.
i agree, but its more for if i get mugged or somethin.
If they come at me with a gun, they can have my shit. If they dont have a gun then ill pull out the knife.
If they got a knife im confident i could win a knife fight.
are there really people who would attempt to 'one-up' a mugger with a gun? i've got no weapons of any kind, never have - but if somebody pulls a gun on me, the last thing on my mind would be "damn i wish i had a gun myself." i'd much rather give them whatever they wanted, and be on my way - alive, albeit with empty pockets.

I wouldn't have any problems carrying a gun if I felt my life was threatened.
I would never shoot or kill anyone with it unless my life was in danger. Fully armed and able I'd hand over anything material at gun point, nothing is worth it.

Were it only loss of money or belongings at risk, I wouldn't chance getting shot... but I must repeat that if you capitulate to a mugger you give up most of the chances you have to make sure they don't just kill you anyways.
Most muggings don't end in murder, but some do. I'd rather make sure that the mugger was the dead one.
Now of course in order to make that work you'd have to be pretty good with a gun, and you'd have to get very used to your holster and develop some skill as a quickdraw. And even then of course it wouldn't work in every situations, only if an opportunity arises to draw and shoot without getting shot first.

When I was 19 a black man tried to to rob me with a knife. Shot him in the arm with a 22 dareninger that had rat shot. Was not a good shot with that little gun. He droped his knife and ran. I still have that knife. I always heard that you only need a gun for maybe 6 sec. in your life. That was two of mine. Hope I never see the other 4.

Hehe... I might actually just carry a Derringer when I get that concealed weap. license.
They're a tiny little bugger, but they still shoot people. And talk about portable. Nanoguns FTW
Now, for police or military use, a .22 isn't considered to have very much stopping power... but in situations where your attacker is probably allready pretty nervous, a small bullet wound should be enough to deter them. If the first shot doesn't stop them, you can always shoot again. As long as you're not aiming to kill, one or two shots should leave them ample chance of living through the ordeal in order to learn a lesson.

I had a guy get shot right outside our apartment window when I was living in Norfolk... same deal, someone unloaded a 9mm at the side of the building where this guy was standing and hit him twice. Me and my roomie weren't home at the time though, so that was good cause there was shrapnel that came though the drywall. RIchmond definently has a lot of places I wouldn't go... I had a couple friends at UVA that would act as guides when I visited so I didn't wind up in the hood gettin' shot.
Personally, if someone gets the drop on me and has their gun already aimed at me I'll do what they ask. If they give that split second where I can pull my .40 S&W from my small-of-the-back holster, they're getting a full clip in their ass.
I'll pick up my casings, and be on my way. That's the risk you take being a mugger... and you'd deserve every bullet.

Does anyone have any gun safety resources?
No one in my family is into them, or even knows how to use one. They have that stigma attached to them.
However, after several incidents, I am considering it more of a tool than an "evil" piece of machinery. Where can I go to learn about gun safety and technique?
I dont want to jump to the NRA extreme, but I think, as a man, if you dont know about guns and how they work, if your family is ever hurt as a result of your inaction, you are gonna be sorry. I just dont want to get to that "too late" point.

Realistically you'd have to wait around until the cops arrive and go through the entire legal process of explaining that it was self defense, blah blah blah.
Otherwise you could be charged with fleeing the scene of a crime. And you would be a murder suspect until things were cleared up about the self defense.
One of the drawbacks of having a gun for self defense is that if you ever have to use it you may be spending a lot of time in a courtroom for a while afterwards.
