Climbing Rocks
    #5267077 - 02/05/06 06:50 PM (17 years, 11 months ago)

Climbing rocks rule!! But i don't have a whole lot of natural rocks to climb around here in Michigan, so my buddy and i decided to head down south to the Red River Gorge in Kentucky. The "Red" is know to climbers as the best climbing on this side of the mississippi, there is over 1300 routes on 104 diffrent cliffs! We headed to Muir Valley Nature Preserve and Climbing Area....  which has 400 acres and seven miles of cliffs to climb. This place is truly amazing....  waterfalls, caves, and natural arches glore!!

First we had to set the "tundra dome" up and make a brew

Now its time to climb, but dont forget your double eight! This is me warming up on a 5.7 and praticing setting up an ancor.

After warming up we move on to bigger and better walls, this is "Critters on the Cliffs" a 5.11a 75ft 9 bolt route. This one kicked my ass!!

After gettin my ass kick, i wanted to do something a little easer, i picked "Kokopeli's Dream" a 5.9d 45 ft 4 bolts that climbs a pinnacle and begins with a technical slab and angels up and leftward to the arete. U have to blance up and undercling some tricky holds to top out on this one! Thats "Kokopeli's Dream" in back of my friend.

Looking up the route..

Thats me gettin close to the rock!

And of course me topin out, look close!

And a special little after climb treat!

We climbed antother whole day and i took alot more pics that i'll up load and share later....

Enjoy!

Climbing rocks!

I'm not too familiar with all the technical aspects, and using ropes and whatnot.. I've always climbed freeform. Nothing super hardcore though.. I'm not THAT crazy.

But man.. it's so awesome.

Truly Rocks....  I've done a few crazy solo climbs too, but i'm gettin to old to hurt myself now. "Bouldering" is what us climbers call climbing without ropes/protection at a low level of 15-20 ft! Sounds like  you've done your share of it, i had so much fun this past weekend i'm heading back in about four weeks! And if any of you guys what me to show you the ropes.....  meet me at the red!!

I'm seriously considering this. It's a long shot but what the heck.

What are my chances of injury? I really don't want to get hurt 3 weeks before I set off at springer.

go to the library and read the book "freedom of the hills" its the best climbing book imho

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0898864275/103-1957209-4110201?v=glance&n=283155

when i started climbing my teacher would not let me even start climbing before i read that book front to back

having prior knowledge before you get there will help you be safer and more efficient and....have better time!

Hahah...  you know me adom, you'll be in good hands my brother! But i would have to agree with oDin, reading all you can will help. And the book "Freedom of the Hills" is every climbers bible, i've read this book cover to cover many times.... and have the new 7th edition!

adom...seriously if you wanta go you'll have a blast. We'll lead the climbs and set the ancors at the top and then you'll be able to toprope the route safly. And the chance of the rope snappin is slim to none!

think about it adom.... its been a long time!

Wow very nice scenery there. Those guys are quite up there, that looks like some serious climbing. Around here the highest rock is like 10 feet :frown:.

I found the book but I haven't started it yet.

I don't want to close this door but I'm doubting I'll be able to pull it off with my hiking trip coming up so fast.
