Quintessential psychedelic literature
    #524954 - 01/18/02 07:47 PM (22 years, 3 months ago)

If you had somebody you wanted to get into psychedelics (in a spiritual way, not purely recreational), what book/article/etc would you have them read to help them to understand what is possible with psychedelic drugs? The person I have in mind is well versed in a variety of spiritual matters but has never tried psychedelics and I would really like to introduce them to her. The best thing I can think of is Doors of Perception by Aldous Huxley but I'm sure there are plenty of others out there. Any opinions? Thanks.

Definitely an interesting, obejective read, but a little dry. There is no romance and little mysticism in his book- needs some dope tales to spice it up,

I thought "The Good Friday Experiment" was pretty funny.

I like it for it's objective nature. It does lack a chapter that takes a phenomenological approach (and I consider phenomenology to be about as objective as you can get when dealing with consciousness). Though this person may be looking for a more subjective look.

Eh, just my opinion.

yeah, actually the first book(s) I read that pried at my mind were those of Carlos Castaneda. I think the first one and The Art of Dreaming are the best.

Thanks for all the responses. I'm going to have to read a lot of those books myself before I can recommend them. Ahh ... so much to read, so little time.

Terence McKenna (although brilliant) is probably a little out there for a first timer though.

Cosmic Trigger vol. 1 - for what is possible with psychedelics, and without, and general 'get ya thinkin' reading.
also read Sex & Drugs by the same author.

Flowers of Wiricuta is a good read on peyote and shamanism. I also like Wizard of the Upper Amazon about a rubber harvester kidnapped by Indians and initiated into the tribe through the use of Ayahuasca.

Unquestionably, THE handbook for pre-ingestion, ingestion and post-ingestion of psychedelics is 'BE HERE NOW,' published by the Lama Foundation. I have used this inspired purple-covered book and given them as gifts since 1973.

BE HERE NOW is a practical manual that prepares the user with the first (white) part that is to be read before ingestion. The core book of 108 pages (108 is the number of beads on Hindu and Buddhist malas [rosaries]), so each (brown) page is a meditation in which the universal wisdom of Hinduism, Buddhism, Taoism, Jewish Kabbalism, Christianity and Sufi Islam are imparted to the reader. The print is quite large to accommodate the dilated pupils of the tripper.

The third (white) part of the book is a 'Cookbook for a Sacred Life,' and covers every aspect of human existence, with regard to how to maintain the awareness of expanded consciousness experienced on psychedelics. This requires 'sadhana' or discipline. This part is a follow-up for after the trip.

BE HERE NOW is perhaps the single, most influential book I have ever read. It opened my eyes to what religion actually is, and mysticism (the Heart of every true faith).
