    #5266046 - 02/05/06 12:35 PM (17 years, 11 months ago)

well i live in Maine and im wondering if it's possible to find fly agaric in maine. i dont know anything about these, but i'm very interested to find them and eat them.

is there any sure way to identify the edible ones? becuase ive heard that the fly agaric is closly related to poisonus "death caps".

Fly agaric is a relative of the death cap but, is probably one of the most easy to identify mushrooms. Characteristics red cap most common with white "warts". At the base of the stem(usually underground) it is bulbus with rings. And I am pretty sure they grow all around the US.

Fly Agarics are prety easy to ID from other Amanitas. The ones that

look the most similar would probly be Amanita Muscaria Var. formosa

and Amanita var. favivolvata. the Ceasars mushroom can look similar.

Death Caps are in the same family as Fly Agaric but look quiet

different. Fly Aragics have been reported in maine

Hi, since Amanita is a legal substance to pick and enjoy the beauty of ill tell you this. I live near portland Maine, and last fall I had 2 garbage bags full. If you live near the portland area, we should keep in touch, and go searching this fall (I know a few spots). I am still learning about these gifts, and dont understand them completly, but its the only fungal gift I can identify in the wild. keep in touch

no, not always. Please make sure you have an accurate ID before consuming any Amanita. I have yet to see any red capped A. Muscaria in this, upper N.E. region. (ME, NH.) Amanita muscaria var. formosa is much more common, and is no longer considered formosa, but rathe A. muscaria var. geussowii (sp)?

here's a couple pics:

check out this link: http://www.erowid.org/plants/amanitas/amanitas.shtml

good luck, be safe, and post your finds!

they are considered a Deleriant; Psychedelic. And or rather a dissaccociative.

I have never personally ingested Muscaria or any of it's variations.

In my opinion Muscarias should not be consumed for recreation. They are more of a teaching, spiritual mushroom. And much less forgiving than other actives.

Lots and lots of people wind up in the hospital every year because they expect a "normal" experience from muscarias, and don't get it. Rather they get violently ill, profusely sweating, and uncontrollably delerious.

They also need to be prepared in a specific way which can be obtained from that link.

Note: I do not want to discredit the use of Amanitas for any purpose. Just want you to be aware of all the possiblities.

well, ive been reading that link for a long time. I am very aware of heating Muscaria to transfrom ibeotonic acid to Muscimol. Im not using them for recreation, im using them as a utility (defeat cold in winter, Strength, relaxant, confidence booster). I wanted to get your personal notes. Since you have never ingested, ill say this, I have never had the same expierience twice. Most interesting on one rainy day while picking, I got an electrical shock, from a panthar variation. I know one person who has been able to lift tremendous weights after consuming an a. muscaria var albino (found growing in NH).

would love to learn about others expieriences.

I'm glad you have had positive experiences w/ muscaria. The negative reports I have read, has kept me from experimenting. When I picked the ones in the above photos, I thought about it, but that was about it.

Then again, I was even too nervous to eat the ceaser that is in my avatar, even after it was ID'd by people here.

cheers- norm

P.S.  it's nice to know there are other shroomerites in the area.  I grew up in western maine, and lived in portland for awhile.
