Question about growing in soil

my friend is growing some shrooms and has had a few yields
now my question is; if he gives me some already growing mycelium (i think thats what its called) and put it in a jar with potting soil or some form of garden soil (nutrient rich) and keep it humid/do all i need to do etc, will they grow in the soil?
