What's your firewall?

I've tried zone alarm. Something about the interface bothered me. It was a while ago, but i remeber it to be cumbersome. I just got done uninstalling sygate because it was a memory hog and now i'm wandering the internet with my pants down (metaphorically . . . and physically). Anyway, what are you people using?

If you have a router, I would use it as a firewall instead of any software program. I'm not an expert at setting them up but there are others around here that are. Search for it or maybe someone else will put in there 2cents.

I use a Cisco PIX firewall. Software solutions are not firewalls, regardless of what the marketing pricks would like you to think. A firewall stops an unwanted packet from reaching your computer. A firewall is not software running on your computer that simply ignores unwanted packets. There is a huge difference between the two, but again, the marketing yoyo's don't want you to realize it.

software solutions are basically to control what the programs on your computer do (ie if you dont want to let your ripped copy of photoshop phone home). theyre good for preventing access from a lot of spyware and malware, and detering script kiddies (wannabe hackers).
now a determined hacker, even a not very good one, can get around a software firewall without too much trouble. thats where hardware firewalls and intrusion detection systems come in.
anyways, i used to use zonealarm (the free version) and its pretty crappy. i mean, it appears to work and all, but you cant dig in and really customize the firewall. so yeah i started using sygate personal firewall. its free and works great for my home network.

in practical terms, what does a hardware firewall do that iptables on this machine can't?

hardware firewall you plug in, and with little config it works. not everyone uses linux and not everyone is knowlegable enough to config iptables. pretty much anyone can plug up a cat5 cable though.

> in practical terms, what does a hardware firewall do that iptables on this machine can't?
A hardware firewall prevents a bad packet from ever reaching your machine. IP tables filter bad packets once they get to your machine. The problem with software "firewalls" occurs when there is a bug in the OS or in the software, or when malicious software is installed that turns off or circumvents the software "firewall".
In abstract terms, it is the difference between wearing a condom and not having sex. The software solution is like the condom... hope it doesn't break... while the hardware solution is like abstinence... kind of hard to get an STD when you don't have sex.

yeah homemade linux hardware firewalls are awesome. my friend uses smoothwall.
if youre smart and careful, you can make it without antivirus and spyware software, but going without a firewall on a broadband connection is just inviting disaster. if you think there is nothing wrong, that doesnt mean there isnt. a good hacker will get root on your system and zombie it without you ever knowing. of course its unlikely that thats the case, but better safe than sorry

How would I setup an old cpu as a firewall? Just two network cards and an open port?

why is this any less of a problem when using a dedicated hardware firewall?

> why is this any less of a problem when using a dedicated hardware firewall?
Because my data isn't located on a dedicated hardware firewall. Because malware cannot be installed on a dedicated hardware firewall. If I run malware from my computer, the malware cannot infect my hardware firewall. If I run malware from my computer, the malware can infect my software "firewall".

smoothwall is cool, and will prevent tons of spyware and viruses.
Sonic wall is ok, but smoothwall is free....and better IMO. I have used both.

the difference between a software and a hardware firewall are just one thing that i know of. The hardware firewall is dedicated to inspecting the packets and taking care of what has to be done, its in constant work with ONLY firewall duties. AS where the software firewall (where ever it may reside, on a server or whatever) it COULD be in process of doing other things as well. Meaning its NOT DEDICATED to really inspecting and troubleshooting all the packet issues.
But then again , everyone has a personal opinion.
