Ever since sonicwall started to charge for firmware updates, I have refused to recommend them as a solution.

The problem with software "firewalls" occurs when there is a bug in the OS or in the software, or when malicious software is installed that turns off or circumvents the software "firewall".

why is this any less of a problem when using a dedicated hardware firewall?

Because my data isn't located on a dedicated hardware firewall.
Because malware cannot be installed on a dedicated hardware firewall.
If I run malware from my computer, the malware cannot infect my hardware firewall.
If I run malware from my computer, the malware can infect my software "firewall".

I don't really use a firewall -- I use protowall.

smoothwall is cool, and will prevent tons of spyware and viruses.

Sonic wall is ok, but smoothwall is free....and better IMO. I have used both.

the difference between a software and a hardware firewall are just one thing that i know of. The hardware firewall is dedicated to inspecting the packets and taking care of what has to be done, its in constant work with ONLY firewall duties. AS where the software firewall (where ever it may reside, on a server or whatever) it COULD be in process of doing other things as well. Meaning its NOT DEDICATED to really inspecting and troubleshooting all the packet issues.

But then again , everyone has a personal opinion.
