Conflicting Info on Sterlizing Casing Mix
    #5262222 - 02/04/06 11:26 AM (17 years, 11 months ago)

Have done some reading. It looks like it's half in half. Some people like to pasturize their casing mix and some like to sterilize.
I can see the redundancy of sterilizing peat/verm, but since coco coir has nute content, it seems it would be a better idea to sterilize verm/coir.
To me, it seems like a good idea to mix up a large batch of casing mix, then put it in quart jars with the right water content, then PC and seal. (the way you can foods) This way, when you need casing, you have some ready. No nuking, boiling, mixing or pc'ing. A cool jar of sealed, sterilized casing mix ready to go..
What's the consensus?

I sterilise - I put the casing into oven bags, tie off, wack in it the oven at 140 degrees C for an hour and a half - let cool in the oven and your ready to go. This can also be stored in the fridge if the bag remains sealed.

Your method sounds absolutely fine as well - the oven bags just hold a fair bit more than jars do, and you really want to keep your jars for preparing spawn/substrate. Oven bags are cheap as well.

:mushroom2:  I sterilize in jars with a pc.  It saves time and you could do it the same time you sterilize your substrates. :mushroom2:

Awesome. Well, I had space for two more quarts in the pc, and was out of soaked WBS, so I stuffed my 50/50 of ver/coir into the jars and pc'ed. the lids sealed nicely, so I presume it is safe as is.
May be off topic, but how thick of a casing layer does my friend need if he has 5" substrate of WBS spawned to poo?

ime coir and verm are both clean enough not to need to pastureize a few quick runs in the microwave seeem to do the job two runs of 2 1/2minutes. Peat is mined out of the ground and for this reson i think that it is dirtier than coir or verm and should be handled with more care.It also seems that if you use a a lot of spawn that the myc will just take over and seems to protect itself from contams. I have never gotten a contam befor the 4th flush. I don't have a need to eat that meany shrooms so I usely toss by then any ways.

Two runs of two and a half minutes is actually sterilisng your casing mix. Thats why you dont run into problems until the fourth flush. Omit this step and I bet you'll have contams.

Verm is mined from the ground as well.

i have done verm and coir, no microwave or anything, except some peroxide in the water i hydrated with.

i prefer to pasteurize casings that have coir and/or peat.i have read both on these boards and in the mushroom cultivator that bacteria in the casing will help hold of contams and help get better pin sets. stamets says that microflora gets you better pinsets, earlier cropping, and higher yeilds. i cannot attest to this, as there are too many variables to attribute anything to the casing. however, it makes much sense and many other people support these claims.

Microflora has an affect on certain other species of mushrooms agaricus most notably. FYI Verm is sterile in the ways it's made, it is made from mica which is mined and then expanded thru superheating to create vermiculite. Coir is said to be free of bacteria and fungal spores but pasturizing/sterilizing is never a bad idea when working with cubies IMHO.
