The Thread Where I Ask a Thousand Questions. *EDIT* Now With Pictures.
    #5260622 - 02/03/06 08:14 PM (18 years, 11 months ago)

I was just wondering why my pins are taking so long to really get growing. Been about 4 days now.

I was just fanning and noticed that the perlite looks a little dry. I pressed my finger into and its absolutely dry. Would this be slowing down my pins?

How would I go about rehydrating this?

Pour some water maybe mix it with a glug or two of H2O2 and Just use any kind of container that makes it easy to pour around your cakes/casings.

I would use a syringe to inject water back into the cakes.

But I'm just logically guessing, I'm still a newbie.

Just pour the water/peroxide mix back in and slush around.  You must have had a thin layer of perlite to make it that dry so fast. Next time, try making your perlite layer thicker.

4 days for pins is a very very short time, mine pin after about 7-9 days, I have waited as long as 2 weeks though.

Is that the cause of my slow pin growth? I've been looking at old grow logs and noticed that most pins are really fat when they grow. Mine just seem to be really skinny. Kinda worrying me...

Well, I mean they are on their 4th day of pin growth and they still seem pretty small. It took them 9 days to actually start pinning.

Alright. Cause I've got Golden Teachers going right now. They just seem to sprout up really skinny. I didn't know if that was due to lack of humidity or not.

Next time I'm doing H. Poo.

Yea strain is a big factor. The biggest factor though is fresh air exchange. Are you fanning enough? If not, you better start!

Simply keep your humidity up and make sure they have enough fresh air. You will get plenty of pins then.

I fan about 6 times a day.

How long does it usually take for pins to mature?

I am.  Temps are at about 72-75 degrees.  I just dumped a little water from the water bottle I used to mist with on the dry perlite.  I also noticed a hell of a lot more pins starting to form.

Thanks, tokey.  I'd give you +5 again, if I could.  :mushroom2:

I guess GT pins take a longer to form and mature...

I don't think poo is that much harder. Pre-pasteurized poo is available from tennstud. That's about 90% or the work right there. He has got cakes to fully colonize the only thing extra he has to do is crumble them and mix them with the poo.. simple. It actually makes the job far easier in my opinion. The mushrooms WANT to grow on the shit.

I live surrounded by ranches. I have an abundant source of poo. YAY!

I've been reading those teks like a madman. They do seem pretty damn easy. I just need to make a better FC.

Nah, not directly on the perlite. Just on the lids to my 1 pint jars.

I'm thinking about filling a small bowl full of perlite and placing it in the chamber.

But, I already did soak the dry perlite (somewhat). But, that would probably help it.

Exactly, You've got the idea now. You can fruit poo like a cake if you want. Just mix your spawn into a small container. You can use the same FC you've got right now. However automation makes your job easier.

When you do start poo.. I suggest the oven bag tek.. really easy and clean.

In fact if your looking for some reading material everything here is very useful information.

By placing another bowl in there you will just be taking up more of the surface area of the perlite that's in there.

You want an even layer accrost the bottom (2 inches works) and just wet not standing water...like tokey said.

perlite doesnt need much water to put off 95%+ RH.  I had perlite that had a humdity reading of 33%, i sprayed down the perlite with my mister, sprayed the sides of the container, and put ONE 12 qt poo casing in there.  Its been at 95 ever since .

but if you do want to redunk your perlite simply empty it into a container, let it sit for a few minutes, then strain it til it doesnt drip anymore and replace it in the FC.
