The main downside to this is that you'd have to pull out the top shelf in order to access the bottom. So make sure you make the shelf easy to move/remove. Also try to give the musheis on bottom a little headroom. It's not necessary, but just makes for better looking mushies.

its a good idea but unless you fan alot the ones on the bottom will stunt do to co2. and having to move the top shelf to get to the ones on the bottom is a pain i would get a shorter longer tub as the mushrooms will only get abot 5" tall at most

Mushrooms can get very large! I've had mushrooms well around 7-8" in height easy! Your tub idea IMO would have to be well thought-out, and constructed, as to be dependable on not to contaminate anything else that might be housed in thier with them. Sounds like alot of movement and transfering would be going on with a design like this. After you really get the hang of this hobby, you'll quickly realize how simple a casing can be to handle...not to mention you'll have the posibilty's of harvesting 10x more mushrooms (for research) then the average cake would give you. IMO..(i'm sure others here would back me up), cakes are poor fruiters, to finiky(sp?), require very precise envorinmental control (to get a real good flush), and don't seem to last very long. I'm sure their are folkls who would disagree, and are plane happy using cakes, but the fact is casing's are more forgiving as seen here on the Shroomery for the past 7-8 years.

I did this when I ran out of real estate when I did my first ever cakes . I just cleaned some tooth picks and stuck them 1/2 way in the bottom of some cakes and then pressed then down on the top of some others . Even had a layer of verm between them . Fruited great and was pretty cool looking also , lol . I had the tall 1/2 pints , you have the short wide ones , you could probably go 3 high , lol .
If you plan on going to casings , I wouldn't put a whole lot into solving this temporary problem .
Good Luck
