Ok, i know they say don't try this shit at home but I did it anyway.
A while back they did an episode where they did painful shit that is involved with traditional martial arts. I'm an ex fighter, so this peaked my interest. One of the things they did was fill a trash can up with ice and water and plunged their arms in and out of the water for 5 minutes, continually hitting the ice on the surface and repeatedly plunging their arms into it. All of them said it was undoubtedly one of the MOST painful things they'd ever done. Well, i tried it and I must agree... that was fucking agony. I've never felt such searing pain. It's constant and fucking brutal. I truely never felt so alive as after that. Pain really brings home the limits of what you can take, and I can honestly say that as dangerous as this could be, it proved to me that I am able to withstand more pain than I ever thought possible. This was more painful than hitting pavement at 45 mph, which I've also done (motorcycle wreck).
I asked a few other guys if they'd like to try this experiment too.... they said as long as I'm there to revive them or drive them to a hospital they'd be interested to test their limits.
Would you??

Yea, i was dumb... i did this by myself. It's so fucking painful that I could easily see it putting someone not ready for that level of pain into shock. But it was almost like a rite of passage... truely mind blowing.

i wonder if the cold has more to do with it than the pain from hitting the ice.
whenever people tell me they are depressed, don't enjoy life, etc..i tell them to go jump in a near freezing/semi frozen lake. they think i'm joking, but i'm not. nothing sets you straight better than that.
i discovered this one day when i shot a goose, but didn't kill it. i only wounded it and it landed in the lake and started to swim away. i'm not one to let my prey get away, so i kicked off my boots, coat, and shirt off and dove in to get that goose, even though there was ice on the edge of the lake. my whole body was in severe pain and my nose started bleeding. i still swam out and got my goose, but i could barely climb out of the water when i got back and it was hard to breathe. i left my boots, gun, clothes, and goose down by the lake and took off running to get by the fire in my house, about 200 yds away. i was in pain for at least 6 hours after that.
like you, after it was over, i had never felt more alive. that lasted for a couple weeks.

It's a combination of the cold, which is painful very quickly, and the bite of the ice. The ice cubes aren't all that sharp, but the feel like a thousand knives slicing into your skin with this... it's hard to describe. They don't actually draw blood, but it feels like something ripped all the skin off your arms and dumped lemon juice on them. It's bone chilling cold along with what feels like a million dull needles being jabbed into your knuckes and arms....
....again, hard to explain....

We did this in kung fu. There was also a bucket of gravel that everyone had to punch. Over time, the rocks would turn into pebbles, and have to be replaced. They don't call it Iron Fist for nothing.
Another exercise was to have a half gallon mason jar, full of rocks. You were to grip the rim of the jar using one hand using only your very fingertips.. not the pad.. the actual tips.. like you are gripping it like an eagle.. and then hold it for 5 minutes. Sounds easy? It's not. But you develop a helluva grip and finger strength.

The martial artists have definently figured out how to expose a person to the maximum level of pain to harden them for combat. I've tried the puching gravel, did that a few years back on a recommendation from a kung fu friend in Norfolk, also interested in Iron Fist. It hurt, but not like this.
I bet holding that jar does start to get a bit tough. When i was in boot camp, our DS's used to make us take off our boots, stand straight, and hold them out in front of ourselves, arms straight, until you'd start shaking so bad it was hard to stand up. Your shoulders would turn into jello...
I find it interesting to push the limits like this... you never know what your capable of 'till you do something so extreme you think you can't possibly stand it, but you do...

yea i did similar stuff to this.
the painfullest thing ive heard of is, at my old gym, the people who were dedicated and wanted to fight competitively and said so right from the start, they would go to the smooth floor (like a basketball court kinda floor, water and soap it up, and then push him down into the splits. its about a 2 or 3 minute process. you can supposedly hear the tendons in the groin popping and snapping. and afterwards its about 2 or 3 weeks (or more in a few rare occasions) of swollen inner thighs and sever pain. and then, you can do the splits. there were other things they did similar things to that stated before, like punching brick walls until the wall started to crack, but not much emphasis was put on it... trainers said it was mainly just bullshit and not necesary, not now adays.

yeah.. sort of. The more you punch something hard, the harder and denser the bones in your hand get over time, you develop callous.. thicker skin.. denser knuckles.. and more cushioning where your wrist connects to the arm.. basically making your fist like a solid rock. probably the reason he said it's not necessary nowadays, is because people don't fight for their lives and stuff like they used to.. it's not like it's common to see a kung fu fight break out on the street or something. But it's what we did and my fist is like a flat rock. Should come in handy if I ever need to knock someone unconscious, but that hasn't been necessary yet. I could always just dislocate their tendons or something instead. Thankfully, no one has tried to kill me yet.

... and you lose a lot of latent fear. You accept pain and become familiar with it, therefore taking away that sense of dread people get when faced with pain.

yea exactly, lol. the only real knuckle stuff i did was doin the punchingbag bareknuckled. or light punches against hard surfaces such as brick. but i never did it really hard... still i got some pretty big knuckles... oh, and about the kungfu fights breaking out in the street, there are a few places where it is common (like the area where my old gym was). but it still wasnt necesarily. a persons head isnt as hard as a wall...

Yea, i started out boxing in the Navy. then i got into BJJ and the 2 make a deadly combination. I'm not physically able to fight anymore, but man, i wish I'd gotten into Muy Thai... CroCop style lethal weapon kicks and knees are fucking painful... i caught a few from a kid who was just muy thai, and he finished me off without ever going to the ground. I was impressed.
