Unemployment rate lowest since 2001
    #5258728 - 02/03/06 10:36 AM (14 years, 5 months ago)

"NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) - The unemployment rate fell to its lowest level in nearly five years in January, the government reported Friday, as employers added a respectable 193,000 jobs to payrolls and paychecks increased more than expected.

The Labor Department said the unemployment rate dipped to 4.7 percent from 4.9 in December, the lowest since 4.6 percent in July 2001, just before the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. Economists had forecast that the rate would remain unchanged from December.

Employers added 193,000 jobs and the unemployment rate dipped to 4.7 percent from 4.9 in December. CNN's Andy Serwer reports. (February 3)

The drop in unemployment was the latest sign of a tightening labor market, which could put upward pressure on wages and prices in the months ahead.

On Wall Street, stocks fell and Treasury bond prices dipped, raising long-term yields, on the expectation that the report makes further interest rate hikes by the Federal Reserve more likely.

The department said average hourly wage rose 7 cents to $16.41, a 0.4 percent increase that was slightly more than the 0.3 percent gain forecast by economists. Over the last 12 months, average wages are up 3.3 percent on a seasonally adjusted basis, the biggest 12-month change in nearly three years."

That's pretty impressive.  In just 2 1/2 years of Dem control of Congress we have gone from lowest unemployment to highest.  How heartening to realize that we have at least 15 more months of these incompetent meddling Commie (See that Redstorm?) nutsacks running the country.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – U.S. job losses were the smallest in a year last month, but the unemployment rate jumped to a new 26-year high, painting a mixed picture of an economic recovery hindered by weakness in the labor market.

The Labor Department said on Friday the jobless rate climbed to 9.7 percent in August, the highest since June 1983. The bigger-than-expected increase suggested weak consumer spending that would impede a recovery from the worst recession in seven decades.

so you don't think that the housing bubble had anything to do with the low unemployment figures in 2006 and high figures for such stats now?

Oh wait you probibly figured out a way to blame that on the democrats too.

Come on given the building sector in the US, 8% is an understatement. However it's like getting a buisness loan, you can lie (though I think it's bullshit in either cases). If Obama said, I expect that under my spending bill unemployment will reach 8%, but without it unemployment will reach 16%, I doubt it would have gone over well. Though I am not well versed in how the bill is being spent. I do know that RR is looking at getting a grant from it or so though and from anecdotal sources it looked like it was being money well spent. Can't say that all the money is for sure being spent on such publicly valuable information.

Really?  I don't think it's spurious at all. You saying it is doesn't make it so.

Even without any policy effects, and there have been quite a few negative ones, the sheer idiocy of the bum-pandering leftists' rhetoric demonizing investors and capitalists has caused them to pull their heads back like hibernating turtles and stifled investment, all while propping up union corpses like Chrysler and GM.  Obama is pulling a "Weekend at Bernies" with those companies and we will never see any return.  Meanwhile several of the banks coerced into taking government money have repaid it with substantial interest.

Unemployment is rocketing precisely because of the demonization of anybody who should dare, DARE, to want to make money.  Nice work, Komrades.

And you saying there is a causal relationship does not make it so either. Claims don't support themselves.

Not to say I support much of what has been going on recently in regards to much of the economy. I'm sure it sure as hell isn't helping, but you've been around long enough to know that economic numbers are lagging indicators.
