here they are at 5 days!! i even spotted some more pins coming from the back end too! this straw tek is kicking ass, the sawdust---nothing just a big clump... in a week or so i will go big on straws and make another 50 bags as it seems the return is good.

Fantastic, I am very curious about their taste. Would it be the same as for the ones grown on a wood based substrate?

What is your substrate formula? Any additives? Did you pasteurize or sterilize the straw? Your fruiting temperature must be high if they are growing that fast. Is it a warm weather strain?

Good luck with your bulk grow.

i prefer the taste of straw grown, i had some oysters on straw and sawdust..the straw tasted 1000X better but has a lesser yeild...

i use a 70/30 straw and rice husk with bits of broken rice not more that 3% of the substrate. then i just soak them in bleach and lime overnight..then drain and have it bake in the sun for another day in a tote. seems going right along..can't wait to taste them. now i wish my sawdust logs would do the same!

the strain is from Aloha Medicinals strain #75..it seems to produce more fruits from just that small log i'm getting at lease 5 of the beauties

peace

i think the caps are darker due to the strain.. this is the promotion pic from Aloha Medicinals as you will see they are the same as mine in color tone. the rate of spawn was around 20%.

Shiitake are sensible to light. Try different lightning and you'll have different tones.
The shrooms on your photo are not high quality mush. It's impressive but they are a bit to old. The end caps have to be well in roll to be the bests.
Here another shiitake flush. They are to hold too, to be the bests.
That's the kind of flush you need to be in business.

I do not agree with you. The shiitake on sawdust woodchips has a better texture and 1000X shrooms.

ehi mate but "de gustibus non disputandum est" Of course on woodchips will be a better texture and many more mushrooms but, i know, not for my direct experience, that mushrooms grow on different substrates that are not sawdust woodchips has got a good taste, a taste less "lignin" , less strong.

Better quality or not, such a flush on a straw based substrate provides nice opportunities for people to grow shiitake where sawdust is not cheaply available and with a minimum of fuel/gas that would be needed for sterilization.

Awesome flush mycololo. Do all your blocks produce this much?

The last pic was not from my production. It came from NAMA forum pics bank. Just want to show what kind of flush you need to be in business. I don't wait that much to harvest. Quality is my first preoccupation. You maybe saw my shiitake on my old posts, here again one of pics of my shiitake, its always like that. I do pasteurize the sawdust with propane gaz. I use a 2-100 pds prop. tank, It's cheap. If I ever get my camera I'll show you my system. I've explained that system in another post. The new one I've just made cost me $180. and can pasteurize 144-6 pds blocks a day or 864 pds. substrate for a few $ propane gaz. First flush shiitake will pay a lot more than that. I don't have the money to invest in a big sophisticated system to grow mushs, I do my best with what I can find around me. Happy it works.
BTW Because I inoculate my subs. outdoors, and its to cold these days (-10C), I cannot grow mush in my $100 grow rooms even. Have to wait.

Actually I'm kinda glad you brought this back up. Any updates Siam?
Definitely an interesting twist on the sawdust methods. I'm curious about production times and pasteurization methods etc. also we found out there's tons of free rice straw for us around here...

I didn't even notice when this thread originally ran that he's using the same strain I am. I really like the 75 from Aloha medicinals. I'll drop John an email and see if I can get him in here. I'm sure he'll have some suggestions on substrates.

sorry i have been busy with my new additions to the family...the straw tek is surely a whole lot faster the yeild could be more tho but that can be off set by more substrate. i could use sawdust but it takes months to a year. using the straw i can get it in faster. also the straw tastes better! and yes i do use rice straw.
