Buchanon: Bush/Isolationism

Heres part of it from Bush's SATU:

Quote:

"The road of isolationism and protectionism may seem broad and inviting, yet it ends in danger and decline," railed President Bush in his State of the Union. Again and again, Bush returned to his theme.

"America rejects the false comfort of isolationism. ...

"Isolationism would not only tie our hands in fighting enemies, it would keep us from helping our friends in desperate need. ...

"American leaders from Roosevelt to Truman to Kennedy to Reagan rejected isolation and retreat."

I consider myself an isolationist (as if in this day in age any country can be a strict isolationist) and these words disturb me. He is just plain wrong.

Any comments?

Agreed. I also believe we need to protect our economy if we're going to save it. The two countries of the world with the fastest growth and increase in GDP, China and India, are both fiercly protectionist, as is Japan.

I don't feel we need to be isolationist economics-wise, and surely we should use our diplomatic power to lean on dictatorships, but we should not be so casual about sending military units abroad.

Buchanon is almost spot-on with regard to foreign policy and almost spot-off with regard to economics.

It has gotten to the point where I believe we should never send our troops abroad, overseas anyway.

Those two big oceans are there for a reason.
