Lost In Translation Question...
    #5257845 - 02/03/06 12:04 AM (17 years, 11 months ago)

Hi, i saw Lost In Translation for the first time last night. I couldn't catch the last thing Bill Murray says in the movie. What does he say to her? Does anyone know? Can someone help me out?

You're not really meant to know what he said. But if you try real hard you can make out "tell him the truth, ok?". What comes before that is anyone's guess.

Yeah...he's a washed up actor in mid-life crisis who has family problems.  She's a young and lonely wife who has to deal with her inattentive husband.  They meet and click.  Who the f#@& cares!  I was sitting around waiting for something to blow up or at least some decent sex action.  I'm too macho for movies like this.  :smirk:

The only funny part was during the commercial shoot when the Japanese director would go on long-winded rants and it turns out he was only saying a few things.

See, you focused on the plot. This is a character study, one of the best I've ever seen.

Through careful selection of angles, a simply awe-inspiring knack for timing, and by finding an actor and actress who simply clicked on every level, Sofia Coppola managed to recreate the silence of the human experience, of interaction, connection, and never saying the things you always want to say. The film was body language.

I'm going to repay the book you're giving me in Canada with a movie, another film about connections between people. But this one's a documentary.

i know you're joking around but i don't get how appreciatives of the psychedelic way can tolerate all the bullshit hollywood puts out.

give me great dialogues and (not in the case of this movie) interesting plots over fucking Jack Bauer and explosions any day.

I thought it was a great little film..... you have to learn to find appreciation beyond immediate stimulus reponse and instant gratification that comes from these formulaic hollywood travesities.

lost in translation was good... not great... but good.

I suppose action films are good for once in a while though but for the most part I can't tolerate it, they're all the same to me.

I did like watching the Island though..... it was a good movie that contained explosions.

this actually has to do with the lack of correct literal translation which goes on in japan. one japanese american i know said its exactly like that everywhere you go in japan, and most of their english signs are horribly wrong... and for a country which does so much international business, etc. it really can cause alot of problems.

also i know many japanese people who are here to learn english, and ive never seen a such a large group from the same race do so miserble at learning a language! the only japanese person i know who can speak good understandable english is the one who was born in chicago....

Coppola wanted this to be in the film because in one of her other works, The Virgin Suicides, it happened to her all the time. She would tell her translator something and she felt he would talk for too long, as if he was adding things. She found it amusing.

One a the best movies made. The humor is their, its under the surface a little but still there.

Like when the Scarlett shoves her pussy right in Giovanni's face and he doesn't even look up from his cameras all the while talking about that dumb model bitch. What a fucking dumb ass.
It was I think intended to make evident his aloofness and her melancholy towards her husband.

Then Bill Murry told Scarlett the reason they mixed up their l's and r's was just for shits and giggles, next thing you know he is being attacked by the hooker.

"Lik my stockings, lik them." she is tugging at them and grinding on him.

He's like what, Lick your stockings.

She really wanted him to rip them. That shit was funny.

There was also your not so covert herb references, like when he asked the Japanese designer what kind a weed they were smoking during the karaoke machine. Or the when his wife called him at 4 20 8in the mourning, cause it was 4 20 in the afternoon for her.

The soundtrack was pretty cool.

All in all it was a great movie. The acting was superb and the character study deep and poignant.

didn't they do shrooms to?

i saw people taking shrooms off a plate in a club....

does that happen in Japan? Because I looked it up a while ago and shrooms are actually illegal :frown:
